im looking for a different car.
what shall i get?
main considerations are.
i will have around £14K to spend
want a bmw 320 coupe
should have estate, as its for work and i have kids, i do a tip run now and again.
want it to be really fast
want petrol
need diesel as i do around 30Kp.a. !

my heart is saying coupe.
my head is saying estate or hatchback.

want it to look fantastic, be a little different than all the rep mobiles.

needs to be really comfy. sometimes get bachache after sitting for 2-3 hours straight.
i have had the following in the last year.
toyota landcruiser 53plate lc4, (great, mpg no good)
saab convertible(best one yet, petrol, auto, was getting 44mpg)
rover 75d estate(like a herse but white)
bmw 320d sprot tourer(great but knocked out all me fillings)
ford puma(mental little go kart)
scoobie sti (the best, but at 17mpg, i was funding petrol myself, instead of company !)
rav 3door d4d(great motor, but more the wifes car than mine)
peugeot 307 1.2? or was it 1.4(carp, uncomfy, slow)
mondeo 2.0tdci 130bhp 52plt( fast comfy, good drive, good mpg, loads a space)
renault laguna 1.9dci sport & another one, a dynamic (good, comfy)
renault sport tourer 1.9dci (comfy, bit high driving position, does what it says on tin, but i am soooooo bored of it)

so im looking for suggestions from you all......

New Focus estate 2.0 TDCi, great looker!

Try an A4 Avant like mine - 2.5 TDI but as quiet as a petrol. £14K should get you a 3-year-old. You liked your Saab so maybe a 9.5 3.0 TD estate?

Dynamic Dave will be along soon and wonder what's wrong with a Vectra, so let's suggest that too. I'm not sure how long they've been making the 3.0 diesel for, or whether you can get one for £14K. Altenatively Signums (or Signa) depraciate fast so this is another option.

Good luck.

Should get a good deal on a 156 Sportwagon. The 2.4 inline 5 diesel has 175bhp in the latest version and the car is now mature so with luck will be reliable. With the latest facelift it looks more gorgeous than ever, and in Veloce spec with momo leather you can pretend you have a sportscar!

The Alfa is gorgeous looking but the boot on the estate is smaller than the saloon unless the seats are down.

Consider me biased, but a Volvo S60 D5 will do the trick, fast, coupe looks, comfy.Only slight downside is small boot aperture but I am trading from a Mondeo estae and am prepared to compromise practicality for power and style.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

i will have to revert to a company car in 1 years time, can only get vauxhalls, so it will be a signum in 1year.
i have now started to go off the bmw coupe.
there are too many about. not very sensible either
(got to put my sensible shoes on!)
looking at volvo's now, geez! not a bad difference.
love the v70 look. older rather than new.
but what are they like to drive? i really want something i can hurtle up and down the motorway, at 70mph getting around 40mpg.
love to get an auto, cos they r so lazy to drive ;-)
so a v70 d5 auto are around £13K but a 51 plate, bit old?
would want at least an 03 plate for the last years warranty to last me till april 06. but these cost around £20K so cant afford one ! doh.

want good mpg.. around 40
v v v v comfy. (done 800 mile in clio 182 and me backs killing me!)
safe and going to survive a crash in. (cant afford a xc90!)
its either the bmw525/530 or volvo d5 again !

Legacy saloon or estate, bit more thirsty but it's only for a year, and more fun than most others mentioned. For real fun get a B4 saloon import.

Youve had 11 cars in the last year!!!!!!!. I thought I was bad
\" Keep doing the same old thing, youll get the same old thing, try something different today!\"

Well, the V70 is a good choice and is both comfy and big. The D5 engine is superb but do remember that this is a very big car so it will not be very, very fast, especially with the auto box, but should be rapid enough for motorway cruising.

They hold their value very well with the diesel engine (avoid the earlier Audi-sourced 2.5 diesel with only 140hp rather than the D5's 163hp).

I tried to get one for a colleague last week and the D5's were so expensive. Ended up with a V70 2.0T - only 30mpg combined though so if you need 40mpg bite the bullet, get the D5 and be comfy in the knowledge it will hold it's value better. Alternatively get a better saving on the car by going for the 2.0T - it will be about £3,000 cheaper - and offset that saving against the diesel's fuel saving for the year (if that makes sense!!!!). For interesting comparasons look at www.volvocars.co.uk and click on 'selected used cars'.

Good luck!

"Legacy saloon or estate, bit more thirsty but it's only for a year"

At VTE's rate of changing cars, about a month actually!!

yes the saving in diesel, would not really amount to £3K in the year.
i get 18ppmile anyway. and £2K back from tax man in april.

trouble is i am lookng at bmw convertibles now as weel, seeing as i miss the saab conv so much.

i still dont know what to do !

In that case look at an Audi A4 convertible and a Volvo C70 convertible as well. Not so many of them around (esepecially the Volvo) as the BMW.

Vtiredeyes,

What you need is a phychiatrist, not the backroom!!!!! :0)

What you need is a fun car, an estate car, a saloon car and a Coupe.

What you need to do is split your budget down and divide it across all 4.

Get classic insurance or sub-5k miles a year on each and pick the car you want for that day.

Easy result. You have fun, spread any depreciation (you might even make a bob or to if you buy wisely privately, and sell to an enthusiast!) and you get the best of all worlds.

Will be sad to say goodbye to them all for a Signum tho'!!!!!!!!!

Best of luck!

Cheers!

Gavin

so true.

havent the space for them all tho, swmbo would kill me.

mind you, might be a blessing ;-) (tic)

OK, split the budget into 5 and allow 1 part for the storage of the cars.

Happy now?!

LOL, Have fun (and I know a 635CSI specialist for when it breaks down, just let me know!).

Cheers!!!!
