Here's a dilemma that's probably common, but I'd be interested to get suggestions or opinions on it.
I've just bought a 9 month old Ford Focus. It has 19,000 miles on the clock. I've bought it from a large online / phone based supplier in the uk.
Having being promised a Service history, and being told the car has 2 years and 3 months warranty remaining, I now find myself being told by this company, that there 'appears' to be no Service History. (It may have been serviced - just there's no paperwork). They say it's fine, and that they'll service it free of charge, and that will put everything back in order. It won't affect the warranty.
I then called Ford who say that there is a 1000 mile leeway (or 1 month) on the service intervals. Any more invalidates it, and it's only goodwill from them that i can rely on.
As i bought he car via internet / phone, it's covered by distance selling laws. The company happily admits that I have until Tues evening to return it for a full refund. That said, I like the car, and it's gonna be a big inconvenience... my px car has gone - i'll be carless until i sort a new one.

If you have the registration of the car, phone up ford, and see if they can tell you who the supplying dealer was, if not get the details of the last owner from the V5 (try phoning the DVLA). I
f you find the supplying dealer, then will be able to phone them and see if they have any record of the first service on the car? Otherwise contact the first owner and ask where the car was serviced first, contact them and get a reciept re printed.

My 2002 Mondeo had a service a couple of thousand late and I had warranty work carried out at 2 different dealers without question - neither of them asked for the service book or anything about the cars history - all they were bothered about was that it was under 60k on the clock and less than 3 years old.

Happens a lot too when people buy cars from car supermarkets & don't make sure the paperwork is in order - my advice is get a refund, you just bought a car with NO warranty - can't rely on the chance that your local dealer won't check the service history book if you need work doing.
other thing to note is with no service history you have no proof whatsoever that the car has even had the oil changed etc or that the mileage is genuine.
Lots more around with genuine FSH, don't be fooled by a low price - may cost you a lot more in the future !!

Having rung numerous people, and the very helpful people on the Ford Customer Service line the consensus with regards to the warranty now seems to be:
If a service is done now it will re-instate the warranty, but serviceable items will not necessarily be covered. And, once the car completes its next 24-25,000 service (assuming that is done on time)it will be reinstated fully.
Essentially i would have a full service history - with just the first service being done late... (or in fact maybe being done twice!).
Does sound about right to people?

Yes, you've been misled on the warranty issue. However, on a general basis, the problem is that a 'service history' is just that. What you want is a car that's been serviced in accordance with the makers requirements. So, a car may well have a 'service history', but all that shows is what's been done, which may be inadequate.

If that's what Ford customer service say then I guess it's right - must admit it differs to the information I received from the Ford warranty dept after I recently bought an 04 Fiesta. Problem is what do they class as serviceable items ??
Imagine (god forbid) the engine ceases due to oil blockage etc - my guess is that Ford wouldn't honour the warranty because the service schedule wasn't followed - guess it's a small risk though.
Personally I'd still look elsewhere, but each to their own & all that
