Some friends of mine own a Peugeot Boxer camper van . It's W [99] reg and they've had it in for a service before the summer. The mechanics have said it needs new front disks and have charged over £200 upfront to order them .I have checked the disks through the wheels rims , have'nt had time to take the wheels off and they have the usual rust grooves at the edges but otherwise seem OK.I have allways lightly skimmed my disks with a small angle grinder to remove rust and finish off with emery paper and there as good as new. Do you think this is necessary for a vehicle that has only done 30k to require new disks or are they being ripped off ? Any ideas on the matter ?

Do you think this is necessary for a vehicle that has only done 30k to require new disks....
Depends on the usage and environment it lives in.
As it's a van, I'm guessing that it lives outside all the time? Been mentioned on here before that discs have a tendancy to wear out prematurely due to damp conditions, etc.
Any stop - start journeys, or mainly motorway usage?
Grinding the edges with an angle grinder is all well and good providing the discs haven't yet reached their minimum recommended thickness.

Colleague of mine is big into touring in a camper. Because the van spends so much time simply stood on his drive, rather than being used daily, he finds he has to replace discs about every 2 or 3 years.
On this basis I would say it sounds very reasonable that the van needs new discs, but the cost sounds high. They should have new pads at the same time too.
Find an independant or mobile mechanic. Discs are also likely to be much cheaper at Halfords than dealer, but still good quality. Or try German Swedish and French - www.gsfcarparts.com/ - a full set of discs and pads come in under £100 there.
Changing discs is a fairly easy job, why not do it for them and earn yourself fifty quid?? I did the same job on both a neighbours Vx Combo van and my own car last year and it took about 2 hours both times.

Just brought Rossini discs for the ALfa, grooved & drilled, cheaper than OEM and have the benefit that the rust doesn't glaze up the pads. They came from Car Parts Direct and seem to list just about every motor I could think of! They also do standard discs and pads as well.
Halfords discs and other parts normally come from Partco so better to go round the corner rather than deal with a 16 year old oick.
