I have recently rebuilt my fiesta 1.1 (1995)hcs engine, it had a broken piston ring and was burning oil, I replaced the piston rings and it seemed to be OK there is no blue smoke from the exhuast and no eggy smell. but the oil is still going somewhere, there seems to be alot of smoke coming from the oil filler cap when I remove it when the engine is running, I guess this indicates excessive blow by, I sort of know the answer to this already I.E. rebuild the engine again properly(this time honing the bores or reboring) but is there anthing else, easier that i could try first? thanks for your help

Replace valve stem seals.
Also the new rings may take a while to bed in properly.

thnaks for the reply
I replaced the valve seals when i rebuily the engine, the engine has probably done about 1000 miles since the rebuilt

Did you check to see if broken ring had scored the bore..Its not easily noticed by eye?.

thanks for the reply
I ran my finger nail around the bore and there didn't seem to be any score marks, the car doesn't seem to be burning oil as in blue smoke from the exhaust. it is burning the oil through the smoke coming out of the oil filler cap and back into the inlet maifold through the breather pipe.

Finger nail is no good..it needs to be measured properly. It could still be burning past the rings. On a problem as with damaged rings.Bores have to be checked out.otherwise you are wasting your time/money.I would suggest getting an expert to look at it.

I don't think it will be the bores worn out because I checked the gap of the rings by placing them in the bores and this was too the manufacturers guidelines.

These engines tend to consume a bit of oil, normally through the valve stem seals (which harden and leak quickly).
You have to be burning a lot of oil to get noticeable blue smoke - my girlfriend's Fiesta consumes about a pint every couple of months without any blue smoke. If I get a nice sunny Sunday with nothing else to do this summer then I might change the valve stem seals, but it isn't really a problem.

Biggest problem on these is valve guides.Seen a few with badly worn seals. But guides cause the worst of the oil burning. Also it isnt noticed on a run.It is only noticed on driving behind one changing gear. One reason why driver never sees it.As fast its blown out of exhaust it dissappears before being seen through mirrors..
