Countryfile - frostbite
They had an item on ways to cut deaths and accidents on rural roads on Countryfile today.

Brilliantly started off with the presenter walking on a narrow country road with no verges, and she was walking with the flow of traffic intead of against it!

First fundamental rule - walk on the right - broken.

Didn't see it but typically crass presentation from the sound of it.

Did anyone see the BBC series about Yorkshire traffic cops? Although most of them delivered a sound, fair and sensible approach to their difficult duties, some occasionally displayed a basic lack of common sense.

Such as the officer who parked facing uphill on a fairly narrow road to book a motorist/inform him of the error of his ways, leaving surprised viewers watching the traffic chaos steadily developing in the background.

Yes, did notice that - an easy getout for anyone booked there, provided they spotted it too.

The problem on country roads now is the increase in traffic. This is because so many people who work in town live in the country, and many farm workers live in the town because they cannot afford to live in the country.
Another problem with country roads is the appalling standard of maintenance, if a hole appears just shovel a bit of tarmac in, which stays there for about a week.
The main problem with country roads, are the speed cameras on the main roads. So when boy racers was to speed, they come out to the country where there are not so many cameras. This has happened near me since the A52 has been blitzed with speed detectors in the last few years.
As far as walking on country roads, be very very carefull. Face the oncoming traffic and wear a reflective jacket please.

I agree with quizman, seen a drastic change in my rural bit in the last 7 years. All my neighbours work in the nearby towns, some are living in converted barns and ex-farmhouses, houseprices are beyond the means of local kids e.g. a terraced house in my one horse village on the market this week for £200k (unrestored) - where will it end. By the way we are officially a several horse town now with the new gentry moving in.
