Is there any way of getting hold of this item without paying the rather high main dealer price, please? Might a suitable item, not made by SAAB be available, and if so from where. I just need some pointers on where to start looking. Thanks in advance.

Possibly from a motorists shop/Halfords.Just be sure to check the application list on back of kit..If yours isnt mentioned it may not fit..universal ones as sold by them usualy supply multiple mountings.Dont buy a cheapo though. They often fail within a couple of years.

Just a thought but I have a Saab 9.3 TiD (2001) and regularly keep a weather eye on E Bay for bits & bobs. (not surprisingly under Saab Parts). These electric aerials come up fairly frequently for auction and often are unopened Saab genuine articles.
From ones that I have seen in recent months, expect to pay about £25+ for one

Thanks for the replies so far. I posted a request on e bay for the system to look out for a SAAB aerial for me and I got a reply within 6 hours! It was actually only for the telescopic metal section rather than the complete unit with the motor, but it was a start. I shall probably go down the Halford's route as the main dealer price is about 5% of what the whole car is worth!

Chewed up an aeriel in a car wash on my old SAAB 9000. Once you take the aerial body out and carefully dismantle it, noting what goes where, it is a fairly easy job to put a new chrome aerial and the connected nylon cogged teeth drive into the body. Clean it all up and grease the cogs and drive wheel. It is about a 1 hour job. The replacement chrome post costs about £10-15 depending where you buy it. Many ordinary car shops stack them. In fact, it is a pretty standardised part.
Buying an aerial at SAABs is crazy given their mad prices. Its the same as buying oil or wiper blades there.
