The owners of the Little Chef chain are trying to sell off most of their outlets, keeping only those adjacent to Travelodges. These will probably be re-branded, so Little Chef may disappear from Britain's roadsides.

Will anyone shed a tear? Not me.

If ever a business deserved to die, it is Little Chef. These ghastly places offer overpriced junk food served by badly trained staff and very poor value for money.

Does anyone still frequent these places, and if so, why?
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Ex-Moderator
I'll miss them.

I enjoy the fried breakfasts and cups of tea in the middle of journeys. And I've never found the customer service any worse than anywhere else in this country.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - David Horn
I'll miss them. I liked the breakfasts, and the prices are no worse than the DIY buffet things you get at services. I hope they don't get rid of the one at Stafford on the M6 north. Not only is the slip road great for bombing it round (thanks, Jeremy) but the Little Chef is quiet, tucked away, and actually serves decent food.

"You don't mind paying £9 for a fry-up and a Cuppa?"

Being ripped off anywhere makes my blood boil. I always wondered why a Burger King bacon double cheeseburger was so much more expensive in a motorway service station built on desolate marshland in the middle of nowhere than it was to buy in the Regent Street branch.

Higher rent perhaps?
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - somebody
I'll echo Mark. They were good in the late 80s and early to mid-90s when I was doing a lot of driving. A huge blowout at a 'Chef' set me up for the day and I didn't need to eat again until the trip home.

I visited Chef infrequently of late but when I did, I felt the service had gotten very very slow. As Mark says, though, service seems to be generally bad in the UK wherever you happen to eat.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Malcolm_L
No,
what I will miss is the traditional roadside cafe, most of which offer excellent value for money.

No comparison IMHO.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Round The Bend
Course we'll miss the painfully slow service, seeing people who arrive after you being served first, and paying over the odds for a very ordinary meal.
Only snag is that the replacement will probably be worse!
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - SjB {P}
I'll miss them, too, usually at Early O'clock on a gorgeous summer sunday, about 40 miles in to a four-or-five-hundred-mile-in-a day ride out on the Hornet. The Little Chef at Chipping Norton on the A3400 was perfect for this, being far enough in to the journey that I was ready for grub (I can't get up and eat up) but not so far as for me to be hungry. It also allowed a little biking banter with fellow riders to set the scene for the day.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Altea Ego
I second the Little chef at Chipping Norton

Whats the alternative? BK? McDonalds?
I too will miss the olympic breakfast. Ok its overpriced, but the food was usually ok. Have to say however that the service was getting appaling

Except the little chef on the A1 just south of the peterboro turn - run by mature ladies and not kids. Service is fast and pleasant.

We used to love calling in at a Little Chef (you knew pretty well what the standard would be no matter which one you used) but, in the late 1990s we ordered a coffee and a toasted teacake each at the outlet on the A59 between Preston and Blackburn.

However, the charge of £5.20 was regarded as extortionate and we've given them a miss ever since.

Goodness knows what the cost would be today.

Must say, McDonalds are best value as far as meals at services are concerned, they have a flat pricing policy therefore do not take advantage of the captive audience in service stations. I prefer McD's to Bk's as well!

Will anyone miss Little Chef? - JamesH
I wondered why the one at the north end of the M23 closed down last week.

Their two tier pricing can't have worked. They have been doing 15% off or 25% off web vouchers for a while (not that I have used them), probably to lure in people who plan to go there, while still being able to charge top whack for the last-minute visitors.

Going up the A1 a fortnight ago, I was surprised to see how many boarded-up old Little Chefs there are, as my family would often stop at one when on the way to visit Edinburgh relatives back in the 80s. I was even more surprised to see the boarded up Travelodge at Colsterworth but I suppose having two there was overkill.

Markham Moor is one of the most interesting buildings they have but it seems that could be demolished to make way for a new junction. I wouldn't be surprised if someone dismantles that and rebuilds it elsewhere.

The only times we disliked Little Chefs was when they were too
busy, which in itself says something in their favour. Are they something else which has been destroyed by the green liberal politically correct rabbitnosh consuming food fascists?

Nouvelle cuisine was all very well in its way, but I'd really like a gorgeous deep fried pie supper befo9re I expire.

BUT, what about the "Happy Eater" chain - do you remember their original logo of a "smiley" face with wide open mouth and fingers pointing into aforesaid aperture?
It always struck our rather basic family that it looked for all the world like a self induced vomit action. Ever since then anything gross or (in our opinion), bad taste, draws the remark "Happy Eater"

I have never used Little Chef , Happy Eater, Macdonalds ( except for ice cream in Central London whee they are the cheapest place ) and Burger King only once - I learned my lesson with the worst indigestion I have had in a long time.

If I can I will go off the motorway and find a local cafe or petrol at reasonable prices and I still bemoan the lack of transport cafes where you could get a decent fry up at a reasonable price.

I forget which services it was that I went into near Crewe where the franchise wanted to charge £9 for breakfast with a 40 minute wait, 4 star fuel was 7 p a litre more than average.

I drove 10 minutes into Crewe and got cut price petrol at the local station and a full English at the local Asda for under £4.

Miss them - No.

As someone else has already mentioned, The highlight of our family holidays when I was a boy was stopping at a Little Chef for a cooked breakfast mid morning, having left home at the crack of sparrows.

I could probably suggest that the cheap Tesco cafe breakfast has stolen a good amount of the Little Chef's business in recent years.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - somebody
The Americans do this sort of food best. In Little Chef it was always "there's a 3 hour wait on food, because two old ladies just ordered a pot of tea". Here you go into a Denny's, and regardless of how many people are in the joint, you get a steaming hot gutburster within five or ten minutes for about $5. Plus endless free refills on drinks.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Ex-Moderator
Denny's - now you're talking. I love the Denny's just off 101 at the Foster City exit. Many is the time I have wandered in there in the middle of the night.

Mind you, Denny's are just as variable as Little Chef.

John,

When travelling from Somerset to Fife very regularly in the mid 80s there were several little chefs in Scotland, one near Lockerbie, one on the A9 north of Perth as well as others I cant now remember.

I will miss them. I know in advance roughly what will be on the menu which is important with two gluten intolerant people in the family. They are moderately family and baby friendly. I can get a map showing all their locations so I can plan a family journey in advance. Most used to be located on A roads rather than motorways which was better as they are often close to a cheaper petrol station than the motorway services.

When criticising the prices at motorway service areas please remember that a large slice of the profits goes to your friend and mine Gordon Brown and in the case of the service areas most is paid upfront as an enormous lease premium.

As for Little Chefs, agree they used to be good value and a biking institution but for some reason prices went through the roof with no discernable change in quality.

Dennys however are great...
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - uk2usa
When I used to live in the UK i would avoid Little Chef like the plague. Their "food" is stinking and overpriced. WOuld always prefer to leave the motorway, usually within a couple of miles you can find a nice country pub. Steak and kidney pie and chips for a fiver thank you very much. Washed down with a pint of coke and youre on your way. Much better than baked beans and eggs that have been sitting under heat lamps for the last 8 hrs.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - blue_haddock
I know of at least two little chefs that have been shut down and then re-opened as indian restaurants!
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Stargazer {P}
Well, I am not an employee of LC but this is a little misrepresentative uk2usa.

1. Most (if not all) earlier LC are on A roads not motorways, a few more recent (<10 years) are now at motorway services and the like.

2. I have never seen baked beans and eggs kept warm for 8 hours ready to be served up. One of the reasons for the noted delays is that much of this food is cooked to order.

3. Is steak and kidney pie, chips and coke really that much better than say smoked salmon salad, jacket potato and OJ followed by a coffee (Typical family meal for the StarGazer's)?

Yeah, I find the quality of food at smaller establishments is always much better. Plus, I like helping local businesses rather than some large faceless corporation run by their shareholders.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - greenhey
yes, food poor and over-priced, but it will be one less curious experience to be had .
the last time I went in one, about 6 months ago there was what seemed to me to be the classic LC ritual.
First , you had to wait to be seated, even though there was no-one else in there ...then the motherly waitress took me to a table as far from the entrance as possible .
Other people started coming in, and the spotty-faced youth behind the counter started cooking... you got the idea the waitress didn't approve of him ..and he took ages .He was cooking Early Starters or whatever , or could have been the American breakfast the like of which I have never encountered in America...eventually I realised one of the reasons he was so slow was that he was trying to ensure every serving matched the colour picture he apparently had behind the counter ..until I sussed he had taken this to the extent that he was counting the number of beans on the plate because in the picture there were 39 ( or whatever)..
I'll kind of miss that
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - THe Growler
À propos of nothing, but reading the above am I glad I live where I do.....we had a full Texan breakfast on the road today on the bikes, that's 3 eggs any style, hotcakes, maple syrup, crispy bacon, hash browns, beans, brewed coffee and fresh mango juice, served by a lovely smiling girl on a terrace with palm trees waving and a cool breeze coming off the ocean. I had a beer as well.

Cost for 4 of us approx £12.80. But Herself complained there weren't any blueberry muffins, what to do? Set us up nicely for a day's ride anyhow.

It's OK to hate me, lots of people do..........

Sounds like a "must-do" Kevin. We'll be riding Route 66 next year Chicago to LA and plan a visit to TX as well among other places.

Best I've ever had was in Stateline, Nevada where breakfast was free at Caesar's Palace (assuming you'd lost enough at blackjack the previous night, which we had...)

Nothing like an American breakfast...........
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Altea Ego
American breakfast?

Its ok certainly cant be faulted in quantity. A full stack of pancakes is a thing to behold and the OJ is great - however....

American Coffee (while hot) is as weak as dishwater, American bacon (brekafast bacon) is disgusting, and they have not the faintest idea how to make sausages.

The ideal would be a Costa Coffee that does a Tesco fry up.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Kevin
>plan a visit to TX as well among other places.

In that case, write to:

Texas Department of Transportation, Travel and Information Division, 1101 East Anderson Lane, Austin, TX 78752

and ask for a copy of the Texas State Travel Guide. It's free, about 300 colour pages and covers just about anything you'd want to do in Texas.

See also www.traveltex.com/

If you're going to be travelling the backroads, a company called Delorme do a road atlas/gazetteer that covers everything down to cattle trail level.

Best time to go is Spring, when the temp is still comfortable and the bluebonnets, mexican hats and indian paintbrush are in bloom (March to May) and the whole state is covered in wild flowers.

>Best I've ever had was in Stateline, Nevada

I've driven past a few times but never stopped.

Kevin...

PS. Don't forget that you can rent a Hog in Austin.

PPS. If you do plan on visiting Austin, let me know. I've got friends living there who you might find helpful and amusing. One owns a bar with over 300 different beers, another is a complete petrolhead (Buick Roadmaster, a '70 Olds Cutlass 442 Convertible, various other forms of 4-wheeled transport plus an Indian with two wheels and a two-stroke Margharita mixer.) And don't miss the Continental Club.

Will anyone miss Little Chef? - THe Growler
Wow, a 442, huh? Now that's a PROPER car. And the Buick would be a Straight 8, of course. We will definitely do the trip on Hogs -- Road Kings with cruise control and sound systems.

Thanks for all the info. My only visits to TX previously were to Houston and DFW on business. I don't suppose you know Willie Nelson's phone number as well, he lives (lived) in Austin ;+)

Yeah, right. Little Chef is a pretty anodyne substitute for an American breakfast, I guess. They don't do Margaritas, either.
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - Kevin
>I don't suppose you know Willie Nelson's phone number

I don't have Willie's number but my barowner friend in Austin will. He's played golf with him a few times at the club that Willie is part owner of.

Willie still lives just outside Austin and is a hog fan too. We saw him with his daughter on the back one Sunday afternoon when we were heading back from Lake Travis.

Kevin...
Will anyone miss Little Chef? - THe Growler
We are OT here but yes I know Willie is a Hog fan. He has appeared in the History Channel feature on Harley-Davidsons(DVD of which I have). I have all his records. Plus Waylon's (RIP). I would love to meet him. Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas.......

This is getting better and better.

But the demise of Little Chef (back to topic) is a pity. On my visits to UK in the 37 years I've been away I see standards declining all the time. It's like Wimpy Bars, they weren't much anyway but at least they were dependable. They were awful but that of itself was a kind of reassurance.

It's 0400 here in the Land of Sun & Fun, this thread has given me an appetite and dammit I'm off for a pineapple margarita and the full works breakfast at my local 24hrs joint. Growlette get your hat and knickers on...............

Many years ago, or so it seems now, I worked in a Little Chef whilst at College. It was the one on the A1, just north of Doncaster at Barnsdale Bar (The Southbound one).

Back then it was part of the Trusthouse Forte empire. Don't know why but times have changed - we used to be very busy on a weekend, to the extent that we had queues out of the door, with people only wanting a pot of tea when they eventually made it in. A typical shift at work involved about 6 or 7 staff.

Nowadays, as others have mentioned, at a typical chef place you will find 2 people, one doing the cooking, and one doing everything else, and even then they are not exactly overworked. Many's the time I've eaten a whole meal, at a meal eating time of day, and been the only person in there.

So, in that respect, I'm not surprised that they are going. But I'll miss em!!.

NO NO NO, They have not done themselves any favours over the years, poor service high cost of poor quality food and in some I have visited over the years for a breakfast you cannot rely on them to open on time. The staff are generally ****** off with working conditions, they seemed to be owned by a different company every few years who juggle the menu around a bit just to justify a price increase.Who can afford to take a family with children in for a midday meal? I did hear some were up for auction shortly with Mcdonalds in the short list, bad to worse comes to mind.
