Chipping a Fiesta ST - nixontim
I dont really know what chipping is and what it would do 2 either a fiesta ST in terms of power etc. Are there any pros and cons of having it done? How much would it cost?

From what I know, I'm no expert on such things, on normally aspirated motors chipping on it's own doesn't produce any large power gains, more it improves overall response & "driveability".

I'd considered this myself in the past on a Ford Puma but having done some research didn't think it was worthwhile

AFAIK this is the same chain cam engine as in the mk 3 Mondeo 2.0 therefore the tuning companies should have experience of it.

There must be some disadvantage otherwise this would be the standard Ford spec for the Fiesta ST.

L\'escargot by name, but not by nature.

Not sure that necessarily follows L'escargot.
I think the tuning companies blurb goes something along these lines:
The standard engine in a car has to be set up to take account of all the different situations it can be put in in any market where it may be sold, extreme temperatures perhaps, and especially countries where the normal unleaded has a very low octane rating.
They can take advantage of the higher base RON in the UK by advancing timing and making various other changes.
I had a chip fitted to my Alfa 145, and as well as the expected increase in drivability was very surprised to find that I was getting better mpg too.
As said higher up this thread though, don't expect miracles on a n/a engine, they can only do so much.

Cons - your insurance could be invalidated if you don't tell them, or have a sharp rise in price if you do. Going by the wording of your message, you don't sound very old and probably pay massive premiums as it is.

also consider you'd invalidate the manufacturer's warranty which is worth a fair bit of dosh - especially in terms of resale.

All in all people don't often chip new cars - usually 3 year old ones that are out of warranty anyway and that have already taken a fair old depreciation hit.
