Air conditioning re-charge for DIY marke - AskArcher
Hello everyone
I recently say an aerosol cannister for the DIY market with which you can re-charge your vehicle's air conditioning

It was far away and I can't recall the make and now I can't find it anywhere.

Anyone know who makes it and who sells it?

It had a brass screw on bolt connector. Does anyone know if this is universal or we need further parts for specific cars?

I think it cost around £29.99 for a large maybe 800ml cannister

I need to recharge the air con on my 2001 Mercedes. I have a 1999 Honda shuttle that's been much busier and it still works fine - though it never was/is ice cold whereas the Merc was a freezer.

thanks for any help
Buster

not something you really want to mess with - only costs £60 from some dealers anyway - by trying the DIY route could end up costing you a lot more in the long-run

Few garages (esp. independents) do their own air con.

Most sub it to mobile operators - try and find one in yellow pages, or get your local garage to tell you who they use.

Halfords have started doing these kits for £29.99. Contain a mix of R134a and oil. If they are as bad / dangerous as suggested, Halfords could be in for some trouble.

You can buy all sorts of diy air con stuff over the counter in the US at the likes of Kmart and Walmart. Very cheap. Anything I've seen has been "Interdynamics" brand.

I read about this kit on another forum. The instructions say something like "attach the hose to the air con's low pressure (or low side) valve and open up the bottle." The instructions also give numerous warnings that under no circumstances should it be attached to the high pressure valve.

I would rather pay someone else who knows what they're doing, rather than trying to save £30 to £50. I am fairly familiar with what's what under the bonnet, and could quite easily recognise the a/c pipes, but as to deciphering which is the low pressure valve and the high pressure valve, I wouldn't have a clue.

Oh DD its easy peasy.

If your can expands rapidly and imbeds shrapnel into your brain, you have found the high pressure valve.

Many low pressure and high pressure lines also have different size connections to its not possible to connect to the wrong line. If you are fearful of doing it yourself thats fine and understandable, but it honestly isn't rocket science to figure out which is low and high pressure. The instructions in the Interdynamics kits are quite detailed and I have used them before on different makes of cars and have remained shrapnel free to date.

You need to satisfy yourself on a few points before you splash out.

Are you sure it's a gas problem with the MB? They had a number of issues with evaporator and gas temp sensors.

If it is a gas issue, then you need to fix the leak first. Whatever you do, DO NOT use gas with 'miracle leak sealant' in them. There is no miracle to sealing leaks, other than a proper fix with replacement parts. Are you happy you can evacuate the air on the system first? No point in adding gas on top of air, otherwise you'll get abnormally high pressures. You will also need to know how much to put in the system, do you have a means of measuring the weight of the gas added?

Of course none of this is mentioned on the can, but since when did that stop anyone selling something.

Pretty much the same applies to the Honda, except to say that Honda use water valve to shutoff the heater, and over time thses can sometimes stop shutting off. The temperature of the cooled air is regualted by a thermostat on the evaporator, so you need to measure the vent temp. Should be about 5degC, but anything will achieve that this time of the year, so check when it gets warmer.

If you're really interested in DIY then while you're in Halfords, buy the A/C manual by Haynes first, then decide what else you'll need to do it properly. I can assure you it won't mention a little can with a valve on top.

I used one of these products today. Excellent! You attach the gas type fitting to the low pressure side whilst the engine is running and the a/c is set to coldest and open the valve. The gauge lets you know when the system is charged. You cannot attach the gas fitting to the wrong side for charging as it only fits the low side (which is the larger pipe by the way). The climate control in my Audi Avant is now freezing like it left the factory. The job took 5mins. Perhaps a little longer if you need a further can to top up the system.

I feel sorry for the people who have a leak in the system and buy this product thinking it will fix their air-con.........

Aerosol air-con gas containers are to be banned shortly, both diy and garage types. When "empty" they still contain some refridgerant which is harmful to the environment when sent to landfill.

Only re-fillable containers willl be allowed which will effectively rule out diy regasses.

The problem with advice to use an air-con specialist is how to separate the competent ones from the cowboys.

You'll still be able to get spray dusters for keyboards etc. They're usually R134a refrigerant, and you can spray them around to your hearts content. Heaven forbid you release a little from your car a/c system though.

Just looked at topping up refrigerant in my 5 year old Audi. Kwikfit have just started offering A/C recharge for £5 more than a can of gas from Halfords, which is a bargain & seems about 1/2 the cost of getting this done elsewhere. They say if they don't improve a/c performance by 10% (based on output temp) you don't pay... Don't hold your breath as I'm sure this is unlikely to ever occur!
I did get messed around by several branches of Kwikfit - first branch was too busy to keep a booked appointment, then their kit was not working when I went back; next branch had same problem & the third had no-one in who know how to use the kit for a few days. Fourth branch were spot on. The moral - phone up, check the kit works in advance & make sure you are booked in, the service takes 60 to 90 minutes to extract / clean / recharge the system.

Which branch/branches did you contact? And did you get it free?
