Orange Bulbs and MOT test-- - mjm
I had my Xantia mot tested yesterday, it passed but only after the 4 main indicator bulbs had been changed. Apparantly they were not "orange" enough I mentioned this to a friend at work, and he asked where the test was done. I told him and he said that he had his mot done there last week, same result - 4 bulbs changed for the same reason.(different model and age of car).
How do you judge degree of orange, or has the test station obtained a cheap bulk supply of bulbs?

I'd say if they look orange in the dark, they're OK. Often bulbs fade or the orange flakes off, so needing replacement. I don't think there's an MoT "orange test", they just have to look orange.

I was told this has been raised with MOT testers by VOSA recently.
Mine have the orange coating peeling off after two years, so I have just replaced them with those Silver Vision ones from Philips. They are comparitively cheap at the Vauxhall dealer,
GM part number
2 # 9270372

I think 9270372 is the part number, pack of two, they have a metallic coating but flash orange, can't remember how much they were, but about what I would expect for normal orange ones from some places.

The MOT requires indicators to flash orange(with certain age-related exceptions). Worn,i.e faded or flaked bulbs, appear to emit white light. This is a common- sense assessment left to the Tester's judgement . It is a fairly common cause of failure and is model-related .Many testers don't bother about it but it appears that the Ministry has been reminding them of their responsibilities!

Hooray!

I'm fed up with flashing white lights alleging a change in direction.

Well, SP, mine are orangier than ever, now!

Once had my car (Rover 800) failed at MOT time because the tester claimed the side repeater lenses weren't orange enough! What made it worse was the fact that he'd just passed a real old banger which was practically falling apart! Needless to say I haven't been back there since.

A question and answer regarding MOT tests with regard to lighting (www.motester.co.uk/motquiz.html:

q) Your vehicle has one headlamp bulb blown and the indicators don?t work. Can you get an MOT without having the bulb replaced and/or having the indicators repaired?

a) Yes, provided you disconnect all the lights or blank them off.

A cheap way out? :-

Do they still make that 'Fog Cote' orangey liquid that people used to paint over their headlamp lenses?

Or the orange tape that you can buy. My wife's car needed it for a broken rear indicator.

Yes ,they do . If you have the patience to scrape your flaky bulb clean and paint it orange(several coats will be needed) the resulting amber bulb will be perfectly acceptable.

My father had to change 13 light bulbs on his Alfa to get it through the MOT a few years ago - "Just in case they blow - they look a bit old"
Yes, it's Switzerland again.
And you thought WE lived in a Police state!
(The Police do the MOT's out there, BTW)

My 406 (would have) failed its last MOT on one of the front indicator bulbs not being orange enough. The MOT station were good enough to replace the bulb and change me £3.40 for doing so, and thus the car didn't fail. I didn't have to drive to Halfords to get one myself and then have the car re-tested, so I can't say fairer then that! Oh and they showed me the old bulb and yes the orange had mostly flaked off.

Funny because the side indicators on my car are completely clear with clear bulbs - and the Ford garaged passed it!!

Then again it also had completely clear rear lenses and no rear reflectors .....
