On diesel cars, the EGR allows exhaust gases to be mixed (recirculated) with the inlet manifold air intake, therefore going back thru the engine mainly to reduce Nox I believe.
Can be good or bad depending on your outlook...

It's actually the other way round, to reduce combustion chamber temps to that below which Nitrogen gets readily oxidised.

I too had this problem with my 2.0 Omega and I got a second hand EGR valve from a breakers for £25.
I kept the old one and soaked it in white spirit and after 24 hours and a clean it worked OK and went back into the car when the replacement failed 30,000 miles later!
