Volvo 480 speedo

Volvo 480 speedo - stokie
The speedo on my L reg 480 1.7 turbo has a habit of sticking at one speed.
It doesn't occur in the first few minutes of driving, and seems to occur when you've been cruising at a certain speed, e.g. 65pmh, or 45 mph. Then no amount of deceleration / acceleartion will make the needle budge, even switching off while standing at traffic lights doesn't cure. It does cure itself after 10 minutes say.

Has anyone seen this symptom on any Volvo or other car?

Volvo 480 speedo - John 2002
Used to have a 480ES. The speedo stopped working intermittantly, it would just drop to zero for a while. The cure was to remove the instrument cluster and re-solder the speedo joints on to the large pcb. This was done at the time by Volvo at Cuffley - not sure if they're still there.
