BMW 530d SE - MichaelR
Hi all,

Looking at a BMW 530d at the moment and was wondering what you guys think its worth. It's a Feb 2002 530d SE with no leather but only about 20k on the clock. Immaculate condition inside and out, in light green.

How much would a car like this fetch at auction, private sale, and also how much would you expect to pay for it at a BMW main dealer?

Thanks.

Dunno about the cost, but cannot recommend it enough. Probably one of the best 4 door saloons ever made. Sheer delight. Even the most boring commute can become a pleasure.

They really need leather and auto to hold their price - there's probably 100's of them on BMW's used car web site. Take a look there and in Autotrader to see the price range.
BMW 530d SE - MichaelR
Well we just put a deposit down.

£15.5k in the end. Which I don't think is half bad for a 23k mile 2002 530d SE from a BMW main dealer, with a years BMW warranty :)

That seems a cracking price for a 2002 530d SE, - is it by any chance a manual as they are nowhere near as sought after as autos and this is reflected in their retail price?????
BMW 530d SE - Pugugly {P}
Manual is best on the bendy bits. I would be tempted with an auto if I lived in a city.

I'm looking at a 520 Sport, dec 02 at £16995, so that's an excellent price.
BMW 530d SE - Pugugly {P}
Enjoy it. Never has such a, first impressions, bland (looking) piece of kit brought so much motoring pleasure. Superb engine. Look out for the hit on the BMW extended warranty, apparantly their prices have doubled since the 14th of January...

your £15.5k deal at a main dealer is just fnatastic.

check bmw's uk web site and search for a 530 diesel - your car would be adveritsed for at least £5k to £7k more.

well done. enjoy.

PU - I second everything you have said.
BMW 530d SE - MichaelR
The car is a manual with no leather, which I guess partly explains the lower price. We can live without leather for the saving :)
BMW 530d SE - Pugugly {P}
Probably - not to keen on leather myself, despite the fact that the original 5 I ran had (I had no choice). The current 5 has cloth. Can I live with it ? Yep. Never think about it !
BMW 530d SE - Bill Payer
One thing that I don't get (that seems common on BMW diesels) is why whoever bought the car new would pay the extra over equiv petrol version, when they're only going to do 23K miles in 3 yrs?
I know circumstances change etc, but you see a lot of low mileage BMW diesels.
It's a real issue for me, 'cos I do a lot of miles so one with 100K on it after 3 yrs would get hammered in value compared to the example in this thread.
BMW 530d SE - Pugugly {P}
My current Beemer has 78k on it....
BMW 530d SE - DavidHM
I thought you had an early E60? 78k in 18 months or so? Solicitors don't generally drive much for their work, so you must spend even more time on the road for private mileage than I do...

The manual gearbox would actually make it more attractive IMHO. I've always preferred them.

Last time I specified a 5, the dealer made noises about not putting in an auto box hurting the resale value. So I asked him outright what effect it would have - Oh, he said, really significant, up to an extra £1,000 on the trade in price if it's an auto.

I pointed out that the auto option cost £1,200. So he was suggesting that I spend an extra £200 capital and interest on £1,000 over 3-4 years in order to make the car less desirable (in my eyes, if not others'). He let me order the manual.

I just paid £20k for an 02 525d tourer with 38,000 miles. Not the best price but the car is superb with leather and auto. I won't do loads of miles but I prefer the torque of the diesel. The suspension is amazing.

I am not a convert to auto transmission, but have to confess that the auto box certainly does seem to suit the torque characteristics of the 530d engine. If your driving is mainly motorway or A roads then the manual is fine, but if you`re snarled up in urban traffic you will be forevever changing gears.
Enjoy your car and remember to follow H.J`s advice and change oil at 7.5k mile intervals and allow your engine to tick over after a fast motorway run to allow the turbo to spool down and prevent carbonisation of the turbo bearings, which could lead to premature failure.
BMW 530d SE - MichaelR
I wish I could enjoy it - unfortunately it belongs to father, and as a Uni student I must stick with the Mondeo :)

The Auto transmission may suit the torque charachteristics of the 530D but at the expense of 25% worse fuel consumption - which to some extent negates the reason for getting a diesel; namely economy.

I must say I do not like the driving charachteristics of manual diesels. Huge torque for such a small rev band.

BMW 530d SE - BrianM
I'd presume you also got better economy from the manual, so you probably saved on fuel costs too.
BMW 530d SE - patently
Probably, but that wasn't a major factor on my mind. If it had been, I might have driven a little more gently.

:-D

would like to know one question tho......
is the se suspension a lot softer than the sports?
i too am looking for a 530/525d saloon/tourer for the right price.
HAS to be manual, for the mpg.
saw an 03 plate 525d sport saloon, at 23K with 24Kmiles at godfrey hall, what a fantastic looking motor. but its an auto
:-(
not many around at all.

would the sport suspension be a lot like the 320sport?
that shook my filings out.

heart is telling me sport because of looks, but i feel my head is telling me se??????????
BMW 530d SE - Dude - {P}
The E39 5 Series Sport is a totally different different proposition altogether to the E46 3 Series Sport and although the ride is firm, it most certainly won`t loosen your fillings, but give superb handling and a total absence of tramlining.

Unfortunately the manual versions are as rare as hens teeth and if you can track down a 530i Sport manual, you can get 32 mpg along with superb performance, compared with 530d manual approx 39/40 mpg.
BMW 530d SE - CJay{P}
There is a 530iSE manual in the classified section at the moment.
BMW 530d SE - MichaelR
The suspension on our 530d SE is just right IMHO. It's soft and comfortable yet it doesn't pitch or roll in corners. Cornering is just right, and I cannot currently see the advantage of the sports suspension. The ride in the SE is absolutely lovely.

Now all I have to do is find the £20k to buy myself a nice one. Impossible when you are a student - best I stick to my Mondeo :(
BMW 530d SE - VTiredeyes
need the diesel + Manual
what prices can i expect for these?
525/530d se
2001 to 2003
and does some of them come with free serviceing?

must set my brain towards se then.
dont want to be doing 40K a year bouncing down the road again !
