it's just got to be the pug 205 but dont have the 1.6 cos it aint nearly as good it needs the 1.9 to make it a fun car and prefferably an unmolested one if you can find such a thing...cheers...keo

How about a BX 16V or (stretching the hatch bit a bit) a CX GTi Turbo 2?
which hot hatch 70's/80's/90's - Hugo {P}
MK2 XR2,

Not quite as fast as the 205 GTI but a great hot hatch all the same. The rounded off square features were great IMO.

The Mk3 XR2i, although a superior car, did not appeal to me as much.

I had the 1.6i 309 SRi. The 205 GTi with the 309 bodyshell.

They probably sell for peanuts now. If you see on for sale, I can highy recommend them!

Come to Spring Alfa Day at Duxford on 17 April. Generally a few well-looked after cars for sale.

Or these two appeared in the Alfa Owners Club magazine this month.

Alfasud Ti 1.7 Green Cloverleaf. Fantastic in all respects. First to see and drive will buy. Unbelievably original. £3,500. Tel: 0191 456 1511, 07718 809244.

Alfasud Ti 1.3 in red. Newly MOT'd. Needs some minor tidying but solid. The subject of a photographed restoration about 6 years ago. More information tel: 0191 456 1511, 07718 809244

lotus sunbeam anyone?
155bhp 16v twin carb in a gently decaying exterior.... perfect!
which hot hatch 70's/80's/90's - Stargazer {P}
If it has to be a hatch, then a 1980s Alfa Cloverleaf sprint.

Otherwise, back to a Mk 1 Lotus Cortina or a Mk1 escort mexico or twin cam.

VW, Ford and Honda build quality will no doubt be better but we have both a K-plate 309 GTI and an 87 Visa GTI in the family. Both are great fun, especially the Visa which is so light and has a better suspension system than the 205 GTI to my mind.

The 309 is more useable every day and for long journeys but you have to get used to the many bits of plastic which detach and clatter to the floor well. Somehow these don't seem to matter in the more minimalist Visa.

Best 309 GTI to look at would presumably be the green metallic Goodwood version which I think had leather seats. Never actually seen one so can't confirm. But for less than a grand there is a lot of fun from either.

I had a 309 GTi Goodwood and it was a fantastic car. Standard spec is full leather, wooden Momo steering wheel and gearknob, pinewood green metallic paint and anthracite alloy wheels.

There are tidy 205's around that haven't been thrashed but they are few and far between. The best place to find them is in one of the owners club.

ive owned 2 mk3 XR2i's both 8v and the superior 16v! I also owned a 1989 AstraGte2.0 8v, that was very quick, so i would say the 16v Astra GTE for the 80's (though i never owned a 16v!) and the Pug 306 gti-6 for the (late) 90's a great all-rounder!

Nissan Sunny GTi-R. 200+ bhp, 4WD,

Even the Sunny Gti 2.0 with 143bhp and FWD was excellent and voted Hot Hatch of the Year in 1992 & 1993.

Apart from the performance it still had the full Nissan 3 year warranty.

Not a hatchback, but a friend of mine at University (early 80s) had an E21 BMW 323i. Lovely engine and "entertaining" handling. Other cars I remember from that era with particular affection are the Lancia Beta, Dolomite Sprint and Escort RS2000. Frequently forgotten from the VW product porfolio at the time was the Scirocco GTi which drove even better than its Golf sibling, though the one car that really stands out as a memorable driver is the Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1.5Ti.

Not sure I really want to drive any of these any more as I'd probably find the experience didn't match the rose tinted memory. I've just done a search on Autoscout24.de (most popular used car search engine in Germany) to see what an Alfasud would cost and discovered that there aren't actually any for sale but there are quite a lot of Mk1 Golf GTis.

205gti if you only have 2k to spend. Otherwise get an integrale. Nothing touches it for grip and it will happily embarrass many a modern gti.
