Scenic ('98) warning light, poor running - Som
Hi, I've got an intermittent (groan) problem with my '98 1.9dti Scenic. I don't have a manual - can someone please tell me what the dash warning light second from the right is? Sometimes this comes on, usually when stopped at traffic lights. Then the car runs with very low power, hardly pulling away. Stopping the car and restarting it 'fixes' the problem, for a while.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Simon

What does the light look like? From what you say it sounds like the engine management light but quite what this would mean I don't know. Maybe getting someone to "read" the code would help.

Someone will be along in a minute

Hi, The light is like a tri-wave in a box. I had a go in the car this evening (it's the wife's). Pulling away after starting it the light came on and it wouldn't rev over 1500rpm. Seemed fine up to 1500, just as if a rev limiter was set at 1500. It pulled 1st, 2nd and 3rd fine, just very slowly! As soon as I stopped the car, turned off ignition and restarted (straight away) the light was out and the engine ran fine. Stopping at the end of road junction the same thing happened pulling away. After restarting I then drove a few miles around town, stopping and starting, without any problem at all.
Any ideas? I reckon some electrical connection, but don't know where to start.
Cheers,
Simon

I am almost certain that it's the engine managment lights. Sadly, this could mean a whole load of things and even worse, I have little to zero mechanical skills.

I know even less about Renaults but tomorrow certainly, someone will be able to give you some ideas. I'm sure that someone will say get the code read if it is the managment light*

Good luck,

* When the EM light comes on, a fault code is logged to give you a rough idea of what's wrong. These can be pretty generic but a garage with a certain code reader (what Renaults use I don't know) can read the code and perhaps point you in the right direction.

Hope that helps,

Glowplugs?

I knew that...I was just seeing if anyone else got it.

Ahem...

Its the glow plug light that is doubling as the "I am sick help me" light.

Its cutting into limp home mode, almost certainly a failure of one of the sensors. Needs to go into a Renault dealer so they can plug in the "clip" and see whats registered (or if nothing there taken into a renault dealer while the fault is still present (dont turn it off) and ask them to pop out and plug in the clip)

Hi, Thanks for the replies. For the heck of it I thought I'd disconnect and re-connect all the electrical connectors I could find under the bonnet. Hey presto, no more problem, so far! Don't know which one did the trick. Where/which is the "clip" you mention?
Cheers,
Simon

Hi,
I've been having a similar problem with my 2002 1.2 Clio. I've taken it many times into the Renault dealer but no one can help. It stopped doing this for a couple of months, but then last night started again. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try next?

I'd appreciate any help you can offer
Thanks

The clip is the name of the Renault diag and code reader tool that plugs in the ODBII port.

You will need to describe your symptoms a little more.

Hi, The problem has gone away! Literally all I did was pull apart and re-connect half a dozen or so connectors under the bonnet (all the ones I could see without dismantling anything) and a couple inside the car behind the pedals. Wonder what my local main dealer would have made of (from) it?
Cheers,
Simon

The same problem has afflicted my Scenic RX4 (Y reg) with 140,000 miles on the clock. The dealer ran diagnostics and advised there were two faults - one Glow Plugs - the other EGR valve.
The valve has been replaced (£400), but 3 glow plugs "couldn't be removed" so I got a further quote for £600 as the head would need to be drilled to have them replaced. I haven't had this job done yet.
This follows on from just having the clutch and gearbox replaced - so it's pigeon for Christmas this year!!

Any comments would be very helpful.

Same here - 2002 Megane 1.9dci - left stranded on the M6 in "limp home mode" with engine management on. New glow plugs & EGR valve fitted and now occasionally the light still flashes on so I'm waiting for the next EGR breakdown.

Some good news - my local garage has now done the glow plugs (no problems and couldn't believe I'd previously been told it was a "head off job"!). However the electrical warning light is still on, so he is running further diagnostics today. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but at least I resisted the dealer's £600 quote on Tuesday!
Is your's now running ok except for the occasional warming light flash? - I take it it's the "zigzag" light (electrical warning light).

Very relieved to say problems now appear to be fixed following a visit to Lawries of Halesowen - they did a brillaint job in identifying and fixing the problems causing the car to go into "limp home mode". They are not a Renault Dealer, but do claim to be "Renault Specialists" - they did the job for a fraction of the cost the dealer quoted (and without a two week wait) - even provided a courtesy car and cleaned mine inside and out - brilliant!!
