Citroen ZX TD Power steering leak - Insect
My 203,000 mile ZX has begun to weep power steering fluid from one side. Can anyone tell me whether the rack can be reconditioned, and what sort of a job it is to replace it? Would any second-hand ZX rack fit?

I am assuming that you mean it is weeping from one end of the rack, ie through the rubber gaiter. There are several options. 1 You can get your rack reconditioned. The vehicle will be off the road while this is done.
2 You can buy an exchange rack and have it fitted. this is quicker.
3 Buy a new one. Most expensive route.
4 Buy a second hand one. Not advisable, You may find that it is as bad as the current one, and wasted money. There is also an outside chance that a second hand one may have hidden damage from an accident.
You will need one specifically for power assistance.

In my opinion, an exchange rack is the best option.

There are several Citroen non-dealer specialists in my area (South Gloucestershire), all of which I have used, who are very good. If you are in this area, I will give you details.

Go careful, steering failure is dangerous
I have not changed a steering rack on a ZX, but bear in mind that you will need the tracking sorted anyway.

Thanks for your advice. Looks like an exchange rack will be the best bet. I'll have a word with my local garage (I'm in Shropshire) and see when they can fit it in.
