Hi Folks,
Car: 99/T (facelift) 406 exe 2.0i 16V, 65k
Drives fine, but discovered (by chance) an "oddity" with the gearbox, as follows:
Gears 1 to 4: Depress clutch, put into gear, decide against it, return stick to neutral position & gear is deselected fine, able to go into any other.
Gear 5: Depress clutch, put into gear, decide against it, return stick to neutral position, but 5th isn't deselected. Waiting a few (5ish) seconds and you feel a little "pop" as the gear is deselcted and you can go to any other gear. Alternatively, letting out the clutch, then depressing it again allows you to change straight out.
As I say, doesn't have an impact on driving day-to-day, just something I noticed when "playing" with the gearbox in traffic.
Anything to worry about? anything to check? Car is still within 3 month warranty from dealer if so.
Cheers,
Gavin.

Gavin,
Welcome to the the world of french cars. Cheap(ish) to buy, great when they work but better get used to discovering a few quirks now and then.
Nice comfy car the 406.

I suspect that it's a problem with cable-driven selector mechanism. I can't imagine a rod-driven selector mechanism doing this unless it's an internal gearbox problem. Though I don't know what's installed in this car.

I know the 1.9 TD is rod driven, would have thought the petrols were the same but not sure.

If you are concerned enough to post this here, then I think you should get it checked out whilst under warranty. Most Pug/Cits of this size are rod changes. The gear should de-select straight away. If it is a developing problem, you may get it out of warranty, and find the box engaging 4th as well as 5th when changing down. They only do this once----

hehe, welcome to the wonderful world of 406 gearboxes.
I've owned a 1996 model and currently own a 1999 model.
As they get to 100,000 miles they get really notchy.
The most annoying thing is the inability to change into first gear as you are rolling up to junction/roundabout, so you almost always have to setoff in second unless you come to a complete stop.
Then there is the problem I have simular to yours (try this)
If you put it into 5th, then back to neutral, then back into 5th again almost straight away you get a crunchy grindy noise as if you were not pressing the clutch (clutch pressed down at apropriate gear change times) Its done this on both 406's

Hi all, thanks for responses, sorry for not getting back here till now, internet problems at home, too busy at work .
I've definitely noticed the gearbox to be a little notchy, compared to the gearbox in my 1.9D clio, which was lovely (gears all very close, positive feel, etc) barring the weight of the clutch.
Pretty sure I can get my 406 into 1st when rolling, at least can't say it's stuck out at me as being an issue, and sounds like something i would do.
But, otherwise, lovely car.
it's going in for a handbrake cable adjustment next weekend, so i'll get 'em to look at the gearbox at the same time.
Keep you posted.
Cheers,
Gav.

Well, comedy!
Handbrake cable changed, though handbrake doesn't do much of a better job than previously, had a look, there's not much more adjustment can be made. just dodgy 406 handbrake, so i guess i'll be leaving that in gear then!
As for the gearbox "problem", further investigation has shown that I can only not get it back out of gear and into neutral if i hold the stick over to the far right when pulling it back towards neutral, if i let it move "naturally" everything is well, guessing something to do with the gate or something? Not a problem with the gearbox itself.
I feel mighty silly now!
Cheers,
Gav.

Yes, i used to have this problem.I always used to pull the gear lever towards me instead of simply straight back and i would sometimes get a grating sound. They seem to be strongly "spring loaded" to neutral and all that is needed is to guide them in the right direction and all is well.
BTW i always find that i can't get mine into first as i am rolling to a roundabout - i sometimes actually have to stop completely before i can select first. Quite irritating sometimes but i can live with it as the rest of the car is fine.

As mentioned, I have no problems selecting first when moving, though I used to on my old Citroen Dyane, no synchromesh on 1st or reverse I seem to recall... Ahh, those were the days!
