Definately a girl thing, never known a guy to give his car a name. Though I have called various cars by a few names, none of which would pass the swear filter.
Name for car - Clanger
I think this has been done moons ago. When I had a small fleet, it was "the red car" or "the white car" etc. Then Mrs H got a car in what the brochure called "misty lilac" so that put paid to that naming scheme. Now we are down to three vehicles, they are "mine", "yours" and "the bike".

My sister-in-law's 2CV (which I bought to save it from the crusher) was called "Roxy".

Maybe I shouldn't admit to this but I have always named my cars/bikes - actually that's not true thinking about it. It is only since I met my wife that I have started doing this so its probably her influence!

Currently:

Audi A4 - Herman (Herman the German)
Nissan Primera - Norman
Rover P5B - Benson - after the surly manservant in the 1970's US comedy "Soap" (The car does what you ask of it but in its own time and its own way - a bit like the butler!)

Honda Jazz was Fenry (Fenry Honda - Henry Fonda)

I named a friend's Honda S2000 "Stu" (S2) and it has stuck.

It's just easier than saying the Audi or the issan I suppose

Years ago I knew of a family who called their ancient, unreliable car simply "291". That was its registration number, and it's also the number, in Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised, of "Oft in danger, oft in woe".

When my Mark 2 Escort engine blew up and I got a reconditioned put in, the wife christened it "Ivor" as in Ivor the Engine.

At that time she was driving "Marco" the Polo.

Then we went on to "Peggy" the Peugeot

Least original of all was "Megan" the Scenic!

Well, I've no name as such for the Defender, although when it behaves it is known as the Landy.

But, my 1972 Morgan 4/4 is called Woodstock and if you saw the colour of it, you would understand. My 1930 Morgan trike is called the Elk as its mission in life is to get other cars to fail their "Elk" test. (A bit of tale explaining that name but it hinges on Elk tests and A class Mercs being in the news when I bought it and the Morgan being the widest and the lowest trike ever made as a standard model - hence the most stable).

Ford consol was called Katie cos its number plate was KTK486
the 193something Austin 7 tourer was called Jezabel, cos that the name plate that was affixed to the car - so it probably still is.

Friend of mine has a fairly unreliable BMW 850 which he calls 'The Bismarck', which always amuses me.

I called my first car, a clapped out Escort Mk2, 'Fido' for some reason. Newer cars since have been nameless except for times when they have broken down, when they've been called a number of unrepeatable things...

So, for me, naming of cars has alot to do with their unreliablility!

I'm not sure whether I've answered a previous thread, so here goes in order of ownership:

Battered old Vauxhall Astravan: Gertie - it just seemed to fit
Volvo 440: Lauren - numberplate was LRN
Mitsubishi Colt GTi: Bushi - mum unable to pronounce Mitsubishi correctly, son unrepentant mickey-taker
Alfa 145: Alfie - not my fault. Girl at work suggested it and it stuck. It's a girl's name btw, all cars are girls.

Prospective Fiat Coupe: not yet named, will search for inspiration when I've got her.

You never know, you may convince me!

Was that a 104ZS 3 dr??

You didn't sell that car onto a chap in Leicester in 1989 to 1990 by any chance did you?

We're not usually people for naming cars but a couple of friends had cars that deserved names.

One had an early Rover SD1 2600 (that was almost as powerful as the 3500). It was as scruffy as hell, MOTs were by post (alledgedly), his FiL used to quiver any time he and his wife turned up in it. I called that one "The Legand". It would have been in its element in a Mad Max film, it was devoid of all asthetics but could give most modern performance cars a run for their money, and on a budget of a few undred quid!

The other had a Sierra XR4i, which didn't seem to distinguish between gradients - it went fast where ever it went. That I called "Mach 1"

ANB 736T bought in North London late '82, ate head gaskets. and whenever it steamed up the words "Don't follow me follow Spurs" appeared in the back window. Sold it in Watford c1986 after deciding a Mini would be cheaper. Wasn't, and much less fun to boot. Last seen in central london c1990.

Same year and colour but that's where the similarity ends.

I bought one for the girlfrind before we got married and found out how much of a mistake that was!

It cost me £150 and another £50 or so trying to get it though its MOT. However we decided to abandon this one after we found more problems......

The rear wheel arch strut mount on the LHS was completely rotted away. I ended up selling it for £180 to a chap who needed a new engine and box for his Samba, so in all I didn't do too badly. I just wish I'd found the major rot before going to the trouble and expense of brake cylinders etc.

...isn't that the new Ford Motor Company marque to make the Focus Sedan more hip??
Name for car - Adam {P}
I believe so. I mean, when they contacted me because they realised it was such a cool car and they'd sold it to me for far less than it was worth, I agreed to pioneer their new campaign.

However, we've reached a point now where the saloon is just so cool, that you can't make it more hip. It's at it's peak of......coolness.

Now go back and conspire against me with RF

A few years a go, and for a very short time, I went out with a girl who who had one of those cuddly little girly cars like a Fiesta (can't remember exactly what).

Actually, it was a perfectly reasonable car.

I asked her why she bought it. She said that she bought it "because it was the only car on the forecourt that was alive".

I asked her why she considered that this car was "alive" whereas the other cars were not so "alive".

"That's easy" she explained; and pointed to a little transfer motif thingy under the model name which read 'Alive' in hieroglyphic writing.

Obvious really.
Name for car - LongDriver {P}
The Focus saloon...I heard they're selling off the run-out models under the Special Edition name of Focus Cut-n-Shut!

Was it designed by the same person who spawned the Citroen BX Estate?

Oh, my Galaxy is called Gertie by the way.

OK, the Fiat has now been named. And it's a terrible reason for the name, but it just seemed right as soon as we said it (in jest) so it's stuck.
She's called Alice. As in 'Alice Coupe' (groan)

RF: This is your cue to explain Milly!
