I could do with a new starter motor for my Audi.
Once I
1. find out its part number (easy enough, I suppose)
How can I
2. find out what other VAG cars used the same part number? (So I can search eBay for somebody breaking a more common car than mine.)
Suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks. '92 (91-94 model) AAR 2.3 Avant.
A virtual pint & sever to you! I was hoping that somebody could come up with a reverse search function, so that I could also track down a rear washer-wiper too...
I suspect that many of these items were standard on the previous model - and the average eBay amateur braker sells parts for the previous model at about 3% of the cost of parts for my model.
Knowledge is money! I was hoping it might be available freely.

Two starter motors are listed for the AAR:
034 911 023 - Bosch
034A 911 023 - Marelli
The replacement part for them both is 034 911 023X (X indicates an exchange item). Since both Bosch & Marelli parts may be replaced by the same item, I presume that both the starters will fit in your application.
The same part number is listed for all Type 89 A90 with 5 cylinder engines (NG and 7A codes). Model years 88 - 91.
The previous A100 with 5 cylinder engines also appear to be candidates, but there is a split at chassis number 44-L-025172, with 034 911 023 and 034 911 023A being fitted to the later engine. Confusingly, both early and late engines have the same replacement part number...034 911 023X.
Looks to me like any 5 cylinder starter from 1988 on will fit!
Ian.

Cheers, Ian. Where, please did you find this information - it's the principle of the research that interests (!) me more than necessarily the specifics!

since someone else has already done the main answer, I can add that the bosch partno is 0 001 108 101. Once you get into looking at the variants fitted (of which there are many) the bosch part nos all seem to start 0 001 108 ... and the last three digits vary. A quick look suggests that the 101 is the replacement for pretty much all of them. Not sure what the differences would be though.
The marrelli partno is 632 234 38, as ian says - replaced by the Bosch.
If you are looking for a used part the vag partno can have a wide variety of final letters - corresponding to diff bosch numbers. Something else which may fit is VAG partno 078 911 023 this seems to cover some of the same earlier variants of the Bosch.
Bosch used to have something on their web site that let you look up by bosch partno and it would give compatible items.
Not sure, but you might also find that some volvo parts would fit, the 850 has a very similar 5 cylinder engine, Im not sure how similar though (2.5tdi *is* the audi tdi engine)the petrol ones are, but they have a 2.3 5cylinder and a 2.5 5 cylinder, The bosc partno would help.
The rear wiper motor doesnt seem to be the same as the previous model.
Keep an eye on ebay for ETKA which is the vag parts dbase software. My copy was installed by a friend who worked at vw when I bought an audi a couple of years ago - I dont have the install disk though.
