Having read all 20 books numerous times, I now find myself confronting hypothetical questions like: what cars would our heroes drive were they alive today? My suggestions-
Jack : Lotus Elise
Stephen : Volvo 264 Coupe
Biggles - Toyota Avensis Verso.
Hold on - that dont seem right somehow.....
Just William - Vauxhall Nova.
Inspector Morse - Jaguar
To be serious for a moment - the early books had him in an Alvis.
Am sure Noddy would be driving a Smart now.
After some research.
Maybe a pair of Pink and Turquoise Austin Metropolitans?
Otherwise anything built by Richard Trevithick.

I wasna fu but just had plenty.

No a C2 Pluriel surely!
Morse drive a Lancia in the books.
Asterix would drive an old CX GT2 and Obelix a Renault van
--
Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
Postman Pat - Berlingo
Sharpe - Fully kitted Defender.
nah, more like a bright red Fiat Doblo

Captain Aubrey, who liked something fast with good handling which he could tune for himself, but who was not always comfortably in funds, would have a MK IV Supra - a sort of automotive Surprise.
Dr Maturin, who tended to neglect appearances and had economical fits, would have a Citroen 2CV.
And I guess Sophie would have a Chrysler Voyager and Diana a Porsche?
Tomo - I don't think Jack would drive a Jap car. You're right about self-tuning, though... how about a Caterham/Lotus 7.
Brunel would probably drive anything he could get cheap from Saltash Car Auction on a daily basis.
He would no doubt have several kit and classic cars during his lifetime.
However, I suspect he would probably want a well engineered car for his main transport. Probably a Rolls or a Jag v12 that sounds nice.

Surely dear old Isambard K. would drive a Brunel. His Great Western Railway built all its own locomotives, carriages, wagons and in its latter years many of its road vehicles too. So he'd have been content with nothing less than a car built 'in-house'.
Sherlock Holmes would drive a Jaguar S-Type.
Old Mother Hubbard would drive a VW Caravelle.
Samuel Pepys would drive Bentley Continental GT.

Somebody -
"I don't think Jack would drive a Jap car"
He mostly sailed a French built frigate!
Something big, barge like, does not handle well and French
That narrows it down a bit

Great idea for a thread.
Surprise was also an old ship, and Jack a traditionalist (what's the motoring equivalent of wearing your hat athwartships, Nelson fashion?) so that doesn't rule out a classic as long it's got good speed and handling.
Maturin generally didn't have a ship of his own (not counting the time he owned the Surprise, captained by Jack) so you can't really take a steer from that - but if he was to be as ignorant of cars as of nautical matters, in one of his economy drives I could imagine him turning up with an Allegro,
"...see, Jack, how much easier these gauges are to see through the square cornering handle...how well this beige colour will complement the colours of nature when I am out botanising...the carriage springs my dear are spheres filled with phlogisticated air, such as that in your diving machine when we have dallied too long on the floor of the sea...!"
