Company Passat (TDi130 SE) goes back in June so we can juggle our car arrangments. If the Mrs has the "family car" then I should be able to get my hands on a 406 coupe - the car of my (limited) ambitions for some time.
Would appreciate any advice and suggestions as to what to go for / what to avoid / problems / where to buy etc etc. Any ownership experiences (good and bad)? With luck I should have a budget of around 7.5k.

Mrs V fancied one of these, the Fiat Coupe was on her wish list too - before Mx5 came her way.
All the ones I found in auction, seemed to be stone chipped bonnets, not just the nose, as if a machine gun had been used on them!Evidence of owners enjoying the driving experience, no doubt!
Also, some strange & totally wierd colour combinations, of interior trim, were evident.
Nice looking car, though.

one interesting point there is re interior trim - why do French manufacturers, in particular, seem to love what I can only describe as vomit-type patterns for seat materials? Looks so ghastly...

£7.5k would get you a three to four year old low-to-average mileage (60k on something like this) example at auction and anything up to five years old from a dealer.
I drive an older 406 saloon and have been considering another - certainly with regard to the diesel saloons and estates, six figure mileages seem almost to be the norm at over three years old. Coupés will almost exclusively have been company cars, so high mileages are essentially the norm.
The interior trim is not too erm... swirly on the cars at your bduget and you may even be looking at leather. The dash is however lifted straight out of the 406 saloon and nowhere near as glamorous as the rest of the car. Happily, the suspension isn't and is set up to be a bit sharper and more sporty.
I'd love to say what goes wrong with them but apart from possible thirst, occasional dodgy electrics and possible head gasket failure, there doesn't seem to be a standard list, although build is a little flimsy and odd things may pop up. Read the car-by-car breakdown.

IIRC it's a 72k cambelt change interval. Local Peugeot dealer wants about £250 to do it and many will need it shortly after being de-fleeted.
No idea how many go through the auctions - I imagine that most of them do but there aren't really that many around.

Are you after the V6?
I have heard it is way way better than the four cylinder.

Having been used to the TDi130, I'm inclined to go for the 2 litre on grounds of economy. If there is little difference (including service costs) then the V6 would be very attractive.

It does cost more for the v6. I have had both the 2.0 petrol saloon and the v6 coupe. For a start you will be getting at worst high teens mpg and at best high 20's. Cambelt costs on the v6 are more, as are general servicing.... My engineer (Citroen Peugeot specilist) told me that to service the spark plugs he would have to take off the manifold, not sure if that was inlet or outlet thou.
But on the good side.... it must be one of the best looking cars on the road, in V6 guise its very capable of crusing all day at 120 + and once it gets going its a joy to drive.
I will have another when I can affort either the petrol costs or the 2.2 hdi......

Has anyone seen a 406 coupe with any other type of wheels apart from the tiny little things that come as standard? I am not normally the sort of person who likes big shiny alloys, but this car is crying out for a nice set of 17" or something similar.I have only seen them with the standard fit ones.
Still definately one of the best looking cars on the road though, but could be just a bit better with good wheels.
If i was going for one i would have to get the V6 - you only live once!
