2001 Mondeo rear knocking noise - Car.Trader
Hi has any one had any experiance with the newer shape mondeos producing a loud knock sound from the rear end of the vehicle sometimes over very small bumps in road surfaces. Looking at the service history this problem has been there a while and numerous things replaced including rear shocks, antiroll bar bushes and droplinks, various suspension bushes. The only things not seemingly replaced are the rear subframe bushes - could this be the problem? just wonder if this is a common problem or a one off, thanks for any replies

Probably needs a new rear subframe if everything else has been changed.

It is a very common problem despite what Ford and their dealers might tell you.

My 2002 Mondeo had its 37.5k service on Friday and is being returned to the dealer on Wednesday for a new subframe. I hadn't noticed any knocking in particular but having crawled underneath the car this morning I can see the bushes are shot.

I've heard complaints from people that the bushes aren't available as a part - its with good reason because the bushes are pressed into the subframe and so I don't think you'd be able to change them anyway.

Fortunately mine is still under warranty so Ford are paying, but you're looking at £300+VAT minimum for a new subframe supplied and fitted by Ford. Be careful about taking it to a backstreet garage unless they have full laser alignment kit becuase the geometery needs to be set when the frame is changed.

For more information see this www.fordmondeo.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/N...3

Also bear in mind the replacement parts are not modified and are exactly the same as the factory fit items so its very likely they will need doing again in another couple of years.

After 83k in an '02 Mondeo the only related problem I have had is a clonking noise from the boot catch.
