Has anyone used one of these?
www.secur-i-disc.co.uk/how_it_works.htm

The IAM also refer to it.

The only source I have found for them to date is
www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/v3/crime/vehcrime/sec.../
Are they available anywhere else?

Halfords sell the same thing although it is branded "Stoplock".
Tax disk security - martint123
Th MX5 owners club were giving them away free anually with membership. Top down convertables being a big target for disk-nickers.

(1) I believe 'Stoplock' do both products....on the basis that if it carries the 'Stoplock' name, it must be a good product!

(2) Am I right in thinking that one only gets one use out of this product ie unlike a conventional tax disc holder?

(3) I hesitated to put one on my 'screen, on the grounds that 'low-life' might think (if they can think) "So you think that will put me off breaking into your car........I'll show you!"

It won't stop anyone breaking into your vehicle but it will stop someone taking the tax disc if, for example, you've left the window open or passenger door unlocked, say at a filling station, and they could otherwise have quickly put their hand in and grabbed the disc. To recover the disc it has to be peeled off the windscreen slowly, and yes it is one time use only.

I agree ~ it could attract unwanted attention and be seen as a challenge. The chances are that a standard tax disc and holder would be ignored because there is no shortage of them for lowlife to choose between.

Cannot see the point..Ok it may prevent a scan on pc and anyone altering details..tax disc has 2 silver reflective surfaces on it..And no doubt other sections of disc will be made scan preventive..the 2 I mentioned cannot be printed in usual way..so although attempts may be made to copy. It will never be the same as original. So I think all of police will notice black areas of forged tax disc..though it has its funny side. those that dont know. would wonder why printer gives duff printout

>>I think that is the point.
I noticed that on one of my recent tax disks the written details had almost completely faded away with several months validity still on it. I only noticed it when I removed it for a refund.
This alone would make it a good target to write in a new registration. Obviously it would not pass ANPR etc.
I am surprised that special pens are not used for writing out the details.

You'd be amazed at the copy protection on these kind of things. As Steve said, there are silver strips on but there's probably stuff we don't know about. Example. I know it's not a tax disc but I needed to photocopy an exam certificate. It was only to prove I had the qualification so I did it in black and all along the top, in large font was written "COPY". I held the original up to the light and whilst you can see the watermark of the exam board, you can't see the word "copy" at all. I suspect tax discs have something similar.

It's the pain of getting a replacement disk that is my problem.
I've had two nicked from the car and one from the bike in the last couple of years. Queuing up and paying for a replacement is annoying to say the least. One of the prices to pay for open topped motoring in this country I guess,

I just shut the roof. Secures plenty of other things from unwanted attention, too.

Doesn't stop the average muppet breaking in though, using Mr Stanley if they feel the need. And I'd leave the hood down when a parked anyway.
I've alaways used securidisc on the 7 & the Scimitar and I've introduced various other people to them as well. The RSSOC Reliant owners club give one free with membership & I've suggested the TR Register do so as well.
Seems to me even if I have to pay for it to be a quid well spent, especially as replacement discs are a fiver (AFAIK).

Oh yes, but I guesstimate that the population of lowlife willing to nick my tax disc opportunistically is greater that the population of lowlife prowling prepared with Stanley knife.

And I'd like to keep the latter away from as much of the interior as possible!

A tip I heard about a long time ago is to stick a strip of transparent sellotape over the part of the disc where the Reg. No. is written in. Any attempt to remove the sellotape to change the Reg. No. would be immediately obvious. Cheap and simple.
Tax disk security - GrumpyOldGit
I get mine laminated by Prontaprint in the centre of an A5 sheet then cut round it. At least then if it's stolen the scumbag that knicks it can't change it.

Sellotape - now that's a very good idea.
Tax disk security - Civic8
Be an even better idea to tax petrol..forget the tax disc.
Policeman/women hours spent watching for cars without disc..would be better spent then. On catching the low life that commit these crimes

Some years ago, during one of the regular overhauls of the New Zealand motor registration (tax) system, some bright spark had the idea of putting the registration sticker (tax disc thing, but a coloured square vinyl numbered sticker) on the outside of the windscreen. I'm sure someone said, "Won't it be stolen?". To which Mr Government bright spark almost certainly replied, "Course not, who'd do that?" Well the inevitable occurred with increasing frequency, until several years later, they were moved back to the inside of the windscreen. Now we have a computer-printed credit card sized object in a pocket on the bottom left of the windscreen. They are printed on pre-sized cards with security features built in and incorporate a barcode, which I don't think is accessible (yet). Exact date of registration (tax) expiry is shown in letters about an inch high, with smaller lettering for the vehicle description. There doesn't seem to be any market for stealing them as they wouldn't be very useful, as they are almost impossible to alter. Besides, the paperwork to retrieve the unused portion, would almost certainly involve an identity (by driving licence) check.
Would such a system work for the UK?
Tax disk security - john deacon
best system is what happens in chicago

hardly any theft from vehicles, no need for removing stereos etc

cos the scroats know if they get caught theyll get shot, by the public not the police i may add, and it not worth the risk

as compared to here whats the worst they could expect if caught?

works for me
Tax disk security - Civic8
>>as compared to here whats the worst they could expect if caught

Basically nothing..Not anything that they need to worry about anyway..Cant say I agree with getting shot though..Still reckon fuel duty rather than VED..Imagine the savings.though we wont see any

Just to dampen the fire a little.

I have replaced loads (probably hundereds) of windscreens with these "secure" tax disc holders, and have not had trouble removing a single one.
