Red light ticket - mare
I went to a funeral on Thursday and between church and cemetery was in a 14 car cortege. As we trundled off at low speed (as you do), most other people stopped to let us through, and we carried on through red lights, roundabouts etc. This was in East London. Having never been in that situation, i went with the flow and carried on.

Only problem was, one of the junctions had a camera and flashed seven of us in succession.

I know that i went through a red light and that was wrong. It was discussed at length about red lights on roundabouts a little while ago.

I would say that no one was at risk because the oncoming drivers stopped to let us through, but someone is bound to contest that. All i can say that it appeared safe to proceed and the other drivers gave way to us on signal controlled junctions and roundabouts.

Now, assuming the camera had film in it (do they still have film? or are they digital now?) and so on, do i accept the fine and (gulp) the 3 points on the licence, or would i get anywhere appealing to their better nature? Note i said appealing, not denying the offence.

Thanks

No, it's not grounds for appeal. I don't see there is much you can do, other than remmeber this every time some criminal scum gets let off for something far more serious.

If you get a ticket it may be worth trying to mitigate it. there may even be grounds to contest it.

Nothing at law to permit such conduct. Clearly states that RED means stop.

However on the premis that nothing ventured nothing gained then if the seven of you get a ticket ALL write in explaining. You might find an adjudicator with a heart.

Nothing received within 15 days of the date of the offence then start to breath easily. Fail to conform is a NOIP offence.

I could be wrong but I think he's saying there isn't any legal excuse for it - even though a cop probably wouldn't have done you for it anyway Mare.

Good luck if you decide to pursue it.

I thought you could proceed thro a red light under direction of a police officer.

In a long and slow cortege you must have involved or been seen by a police car somewhere en route.

Pity he wasn't in the field of vision of the camera and that you failed to take his name and number. If everyone stopped to take details every time a police officer signalled you to do something, chaos would ensue.

saw a similar situation recently where a car having gone through on green was stopped from carying on over the lights by the car in front trying to perform a prohibited right turn. When this guy moved the lights had turned and the poor chap behind, with no alternative but to move on, was flashed.
Typical unintended consequence of the state were in!

No, there was no police escort or anything. We just went through the light.

I'll see if anything turns up, and go from there.

Thanks all

The other thread reminded me. Over a month and no ticket! Phew

(kiss of death - what until Monday's post!)

Come on M'Lord PU you know what I meant...

Unless of course you have whiff of a change in the law or a precedent that allows what has been reported. If so then give the bloke the SP for 60 notes and 3 points is draconian for the 7 of them.

Interesting point also raised above. Go through lights at the direction of a PC. You fail to conform to the lights. Ignore him and you fail to conform to his direction. Catch 22? Was told at Training Skool hang something over the lights thereby they did not conform to Traffic Signs and General Directions so no offence committed if waved on.

Got your crash hat and Nomex ready for February Tally Ho. Another good earner for the boys?

What happens when you're the first car at red light and a ambluance/fire engine trying to get through. You move out of the way and flash?
Red light ticket - Ian (Cape Town)
imagos, this has happened to me, but NOT with a fire engine.
A while back, I was driving home late at night, and slowed to stop for a red light.
Behind me, there was somebody coming up at some severe speed. I watched him in the rearview, and saw him hamering the brakes in an attempt to stop - screeching of tyres, car slewing everywhere etc. Being "wise", and with nothing coming from the right (ie into the T-junction) I put my foot down, and wnet through the light. Flash Flash. He came in behind me, wreathed in smoke from his tyres. Flash Flash.
Phoned the traffic dept next morning, and explained the situation ... I didn't want to be rear-ended my some drunken numpty.
Got a letter and pictures a few weeks later, with a large NIL PROS stamp across it.
Bargain.
