Cote d,Azur / Provence - johnny
What are the roads like down this part of France in late June / early July? I have memories of a tortuous roads from Digne to Grasse 30 years ago, also a nose to tail crawl along the south coast around Nice / Cannes.

Some things don't change!!
Only been once - Whit about 3 years ago but your description certainly rings a bell! Would think June/July better than August though. Others will know better than me.

I was there in June 2002. The main motorway (toll road) that runs along near the coast there is good but as you remember correctly the minor roads are not the best.

Not too busy at that time of year but there were a few bottlenecks, particularly around Antibes and Toulon.

I found the main problem wasn't the quality of the road network, rather the lack of signs telling you where things were and which lane to get into to avoid wild eyed locals screaming "Imbecile!" at me.

That's the French practice of putting roadsigns at the junction, often on the side wall of the turn, instead of somewhere in advance.

I lived in Avignon for a year, and came to the conclusion that the Avignon traffic system and signposting is designed to get you into the place but not allow you out.

I worked as a holiday rep around the Frejus area of the Cote d'Azur during 2003 and my only advice is to avoid taking the coast road to St Tropez during any of the summer months unless you enjoy being stuck in miles of jams with no air conditioning. In fact, much of the cote suffers over July and August from the millions upon millions of holidaymakers clogging the main roads.

As for the French drivers...couldnt agree more. I remember sitting at a pavement cafe one early morning and this battered 2CV could be heard coming a mile away. Eventually, it pulled up alongside the cafe but did not stop and went headlong into the nearest lamppost. The guy in the car got out as casual as anything, went into the cafe and got some fags, got back in his car and continued his journey like nothing untoward had happened. Nobody in the cafe turned a blind eye.

Go up and onto the mountain roads along the south coast - great fun and some wonderful scenery.

However, even being stuck in a traffic jam along the main coast road around Cannes, Monaco and Nice is supremely preferable to being on the M6 on a Friday afternoon....:-)
