I've quite got to like him in a funny sort of way, couldn't we adopt him as a sort of Forum mascot? He doesn't seem to mind an occasional bit of abuse and now and again he is actually rather sensible.

Maybe I'm just feeling generous because the weekend's here.

That depends which 'him' you're talking about, Tom. If it's CW, I wouldn't worry. he'll be around for ever as long as he behaves!

Can you see me rubbing my hands together, gleefully?

Bit like wiping out speeding by photographing the registration plates of law abiding motorists.

Or eliminating child fatalities by making it illegal not to stop when a child runs in front of you.

Or eliminating the pollution from buses and power stations by taxing motorists off the road.

Or even making a forum a motoring one by claiming that it is.

I finally see where you are coming from BRM.

And where you are going.

And you have finally convinced me.

Politics and spin and power will always triumph.

IO

I reckon there are quite a few different political allegiances, views on the environment, public transport, policing and so on among the forum contributors. You are the only one who tries to ram their views down our throats. A discussion where one person rants and shouts has failed. The only sensible thing is for that person to be told to calm down and make reasonable comment or leave. The alternative doesn't bear thinking about. You may think your views are fair and reasonable - and sometimes they undoubtedly are - but we just don't care enough what you think to want to listen to it all the time. And we certainly don't want to be told we're wrong. Persuaded, yes. Told, no.

LAC is different I think: he can be amusing. You are just thuggish.

Re: The problems of the world - gone - Slartibartfast
Wish it was that easy to rid the real world of problems so easily.
Re: The problems of the world - gone - Tomo
But what were they, before they were wiped?
Re: The problems of the world - gone - Tomo
Not much use after they have been bent over poor old lac's nut!
Re: The problems of the world - gone - Alvin Booth
Poor old Chris...I can't help but see him as the lad in the plaground who is neglected by a poor family, has no friends and wants to play with the other boys. But is constantly bullied by the other well fed fat bullies who see him as an easy target. If I was in there with you Chris I would have to stand with you even if I didn't agree with you.
Chris has given me a few laughs with his whacky inventions and his love for his old Lada and we should take care of him. I've never heard him say anything malicious as yet so where is the problem??
power to the people as Wolfy used to say......

Re: The problems of the world - gone - ladas are cool
most of what you have just said is true, but my family are OK (apart from my dad, who just loses his temper, throws things around, and hits me and my mam), life is so depressing in this house. but you have to believe that life will get better (i hope). p.s. i aam typing this out while he is not around, i hope he doesnt see it, or he might get the stair-rod out again.
Re: The problems of the world - gone - Mark (Brazil)

Martyn !
Re: The problems of the world - gone - ladas are cool
i am telling the truth, but wonder why i try.
Re: The problems of the world - gone - Mark (Brazil)
Chris,

At least you're trying.

As it happens, very.
Re: The problems of the world - gone - Moosh
Try intoducing exhaust fumes into your Lada !
Re: The problems of the world - gone - ladas are cool
i might be trying that if my life doesnt get better.

people seem to think that i drive lada's as my perfect choice of car, its just that i cant afford anything else, i would prefer something like a nomal car (mondeo, primera, vectra, etc) but i cant afford it, £600 is about the most i can afford for any car.
Re: The problems of the world - gone - Moosh
So you are you are admitting "Ladas are NOT really cool" !
Re: The problems of the world - gone - ladas are cool
yep, i only put 'ladas are cool' as a user name because i couldnt think of anything else (yes i know that loads of user names are possible, but i was tired when i thought of the one i have now), so maybe i will call myself 'superstud' or what about 'gods gift to women' - like hell i am (to both of those ideas)
Re: The problems of the world - gone - ladas are cool
so i am thinking about this 'loser user', it has a sort of ring to it.
Re: The problems of the world - gone - alvin.booth
Chris,
You mention your Dad having a stair rod. Would it by any chance be brass???
If so does he happen to have any others as I have been trying to obtain some and they seem to have gone out of fashion.
I would be pleased to have them and it could help yourself also, unless he finds something else to whup you with......

Standing in defence of LAC - Kev
I think we should be a bit nicer to LAC, from what ive read [please not, my opinion only] hes been much better. His points have been more reasoned and less forced. Also hes one of those who makes you smile for whatever reason. I think this place wouldn't be the same without him.
O, and by the way, I wish I could afford a £600 lada.

Kev
Re: Standing in defence of LAC - ladas are cool
the lada is only worth about £50 (or less), i have £600 to spend on a car, but no more. my mam has two cars (she should really sell one of them), she has a 1987 citroen BX16 TRS, and a 1986 volvo 340 1.4 DL. but i have a 1991 lada riva 1.3 E,
Re: You are just thuggish - IO
Are you referring to this:

Bit like wiping out speeding by photographing the registration plates of law abiding motorists.

Or:

The views of the other contributors as espused above, eg re LAC?
Re: You are just thuggish - IO
Or perhaps to this rant:

> Talking of Afghanistan, isn't that the place where they only drive Toyotas?

> And where they blow up Buddhas because they have nothing to do with Islam?

> Hmmmmmm, they'll be burning Bibles next, then who knows where it will all end!

Is that: tries to ram their views down our throats?

And is this: And we certainly don't want to be told we're wrong. Persuaded, yes. Told, no.

"Mind you, that won't stop people like Independent Observer, whover that is, from throwing in yet another silly off-topic remark."
Re: What were they? - IO
The above.

And:

"Mind you, that won't stop people like Independent Observer, whover that is, from throwing in yet another silly off-topic remark."

Now I know why you lot used to wind up that bogush character so much:

> Talking of Afghanistan, isn't that the place where they only drive Toyotas?

Off topic?

Toyotas off topic?

Or perhaps I'd mistaken this for the "Problems of the World" thread - silly me!

> And where they blow up Buddhas because they have nothing to do with Islam?

Now I see - I'd mistaken this for the "Delete everything that is off-topic" thread - silly me

> Hmmmmmm, they'll be burning Bibles next, then who knows where it will all end!

Nope, I'd mistaken it for the "The problem with deleting the thread is that not all of it is tripe" thread - even sillier me.

Or even the "So some people will feel offended that their common-sense contribution has been wiped along with the rubbish" thread - just how silly can I get?

Or perhaps even the "Some people will feel offended that their common-sense contribution has been rubbished" thread - about as silly as that I guess!

On the now totally off-topic point of multi-topic forums:

Perhaps we [you] could have a "Honest John's Q&A forum, your chance to make yourself heard. Join the discussion, contribute your opinions, comment on Latest News items in The Back Room" topic (though perhaps you could drop the "A" bit, in fact why not drop the "Q" bit while you are at it? BTW just where DOES it mention technical/mechanical? - errrrrrrrrm NOWHERE! and you REFUSE to correct that to what you want it to be, despite it being continually brought to your attention!! Oops, there I go, SHOUTING, in a refined technical forum, anyone would thing that I was trying to make myself heard!!!).

Or just a "Got a point to make in the discussion group?" topic.

Errrrrrmmmmm, NO, of course we couldn't, silly me!

That would be a totally silly, and totally off-topic non-common-sense contribution.

Ah, well, better see if I can join up with that right-wing homicidal motorist bogush character and go on a library burning spree :-(
Re: Non-thuggish Response to IO - IO
Polite, reasoned, persuasive, non-ranting, in no way trying to force it's opinion, discussion on the above:

> having re-read the thread started by LAC...The problems of the world, the last couple of entries by Indepedant Obs. seem to reinforce my point. They got pretty *ugly* and not really the sort of stuff that wants to continue, I wouldn't have thought - Peace to the world and all that. What this has reminded me of though, is that if we can get as *heated and bitter* in an entry to a website, then the *same individuals are driving on the same roads as me. I suspect that on the road it would be called 'Road Rage'*. So for me it serves as a warning!! On this site I can just switch off or go to another topic. After 27 years in my job of cutting people out of wrecked cars, I've seen the effcts of drivers errors and rage. It' as *ugly in the flesh* as these comments are here.

(*my emphasis*)

Well, that's about par for the course for the typical cool, calm, level headed, rational and reasoned demolition of my posts by people who definately aren't trying to ram their views down my throat. No ranting or raving. No shouting. Just sensible fair and reasonable discussion gently persuading me that I'm wrong.

So that's alright then.

No one's telling me that I'm wrong.

Just that I'm wrong and on a par with someone who causes 27 years of carnage.

And "ugly in the flesh".

Mind you, if you care to search back: that's nothing to the insults and abuse hurled at that bogush character. So I suppose I have no right to complain.

But, then I'm not in the "in-crowd", so yes, I have no right to complain, or at least to expect any of my complaints to be addressed.

Re: Non-thuggish Response to IO - markymarkn
IO why are you so angry all the time?

If you dont like it, then leave. You seem to violently reply to practically everything any of us say that you have the slightest disagreement with, obviously not enjoying the backroom like the rest of us do, yet you keep posting replies and will not leave it alone.

If you dont get along with us, find someone who you do get along with somewhere else. You hopefully then wont need to get so irate all the time. Simple as that.

end of.

LAC - cheer up kiddo. Don't let life get you down, look on the bright side. You worry all your life then you die, you dont worry you die anyway, so why worry? If you wanna stick up for ladas you do it - hey if someone started 'dissin' astras i'd be right on the case!
Re: Non-thuggish Response to IO - ladas are cool

Re: Thuggish Response - IO
markymarkn

"IO why are you so angry all the time?"

If you have to ask that then I can hardly have explained loudly/forcefully/thuggishly enough, can I?

Notwithstanding that: if you feel that I have expressed my anger too violently feel free to quote examples and I will try to moderate it.

Unfortunately, though I have repeatedly made this request, including of the moderator, no one has yet seen fit (been able?) to acquiesce with it.

I don't come here to like it. Not to enjoy it. Nor to get along.

I come here because it is (was?) advertised in a national/international quality paper that the powers that be read.

I come here because it purports to be a motorists forum.

And not least because it advertises itself as a place where you can have:

"your chance to make yourself heard. Join the discussion, contribute your opinions, comment on Latest News items"

A place to come if you have:

"Got a point to make in the discussion group?"

So I come, and I comment on the latest news, contribute my opinion, make my point.

And I hope that I can make myself heard, if not by the powers that be, then at least by the people who vote them in, or don't bother to vote them out, or even don't bother to keep their actions under scrutiny.

And yes, I do it with passion.

Yes, I believe that I should stand up for the rights of children to live.

Instead of the "right" to run in front of a speeding truck, and expect it to stop before it kills them.

The right of industry and public alike to be free to use roads without them being reduced to a fraction of their capacity by 24 hour bus lanes (where are the 24 hour buses?) and traffic "calming" when the government's own research says that both are counter-productive.

The right of motorists to travel at a reasonable speed on a reasonable road without having to go through toll gatsos for the privilege. (And the right of children to have speed cameras outside their schools, where I, at least, have never seen any).

The right...................

I could go on.

But every time I do the "motorists" tell me to shut up and sit down and let the other chap have his say.

Well, excuse me, but I do.

And if I think that he is wrong then I tell him, and why.

And if he thinks that I am wrong: then he tells me, and why.

Or sometimes he just regurgitates the same cr*p. And I regurgitate lots of different cr*p (which means I must be right, no?).

But whichever way the argument goes (yes argument, not the mutual backslapping of the boys in the back room mutual appreciation society, ever so sorry!) you get a circle of bystanders, not interested in the topic or discussion, but still insistent in viewing the thread, and hurling insults at me from the sidelines. And telling me to leave!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Probably no connection to notLabour.

Probably not spin machine plants.

Probably not socialist stooges.

But you never hear them complain daily about the cr*p from the government.

You never hear them call daily for the spin doctors to give the other side of the argument.

But, I must admit, just now and again, when a bit of the creeping stealth attack on motorists bites them personally, they do complain.

Politely.

And then they wonder why the government has decided that even 99% of all motorists are happy with stealth tax cameras, and crumbling infrastructure, and so called safety campaigns which actually kill. And even when they aren't happy: the most that will happen is that they will moan a little for a while, and then go back to discussing what in car freshener scent they prefer, or how to knit a steering wheel cover.

And why the government has decided that the 1% of motorists that aren't happy can be happily ignored.

Because the other 99% will happily shut them up on the governments behalf.

Who needs spin doctors and plants and stooges with support like that?

And you wonder why I am so angry ALL THE TIME ! ?
Re: Non-thuggish Response to IO - KB
My thanks go to Independant Observer for his compliments to me. I am, he assures me, polite, reasoned, cool, calm, level headed, rational, and reasoned, refined and restrained (his words). Blimey, no-one's ever been as complimentary as that before. If I am all those things (and that's doubtful), it might be something to do with those 27 years I spoke of. Rest assured Independant Observer, that if you do find yourself trapped by the legs with the steering wheel penetrating your chest and blood tipping out of your bodily orifices, the people who cut you out will put their political persuasions to one side and will act sensibly and rationally. Something I can't imagine you doing. I gather that most contributors here aren't too impressed with your approach to sensible reasoned coverage of the topics raised, so by way of a departure from my usual persona - I suggest you **** *** (Sorry, KB. Chris is right).

Good wishes, KB.
Re: Non-thuggish Response to IO - ladas are cool
i have been told that you cant use bad language on this website, so the last part of your message should be wiped off, we will just have to see if it does.
Re: Non-thuggish Response to IO - IO
KB, if you are cutting me out it's because I have swerved to avoid a child that has been taught to run out in front of me because it has been taught that my car "MUST" stop if it does so.

Or because a wheel has dropped off from going over one too many speed bumps at 5 - 10 mph in a realistic 30 zone.

Or because I have been involved in an accident with a bad driver shooting out of a rat run to avoid speed cameras on a safe, fast dual carriageway, or on the open road, but will never be able to claim against him because his reg is fake.

Or simply because I have simply clocked up enough mileage (is it a fatal accident per 400 MILLION miles driven by the average motorist?) going round all the "safety" detours thoughtfully provided by the traffic "calming" brigade.

At MY expense, both in time and money.

If the other contributors to this board don't object to paying through the nose for the priviledge of being nearly (but not quite - that would be killing the goose that lays the golden eggs) driven off badly maintained, traffic "calmed", bus lane constricted, stealth speed tax monitored DANGEROUS (un-policed) roads (and how long before they make the fire brigade a profit centre rather than a cost centre?) that's their prerogative.

But I can't afford to pay for their political beliefs.

And I don't want my children to pay with their lives for their ideological obsessions.

And if I draw attention to eg the government's own transport research labs' findings that the emperor isn't wearing any clothes, but that that IS a gun he's pointing at motorists, and no ene else can see it, I feel It's My DUTY to SHOUT a warning.

That may make me Mad. That might make me BAD.

But what really makes me *ANGRY* is hypocricy.

Not just the hypocricy of government spinning the opposite of its own research.

Not just the hypocricy of government ministers polluting the atmosphere and burning up resources at our expense in limos and 2 jags.

But the hypocricy of drivers allegedly interested in not just motoring, but polite, refined discussion, and acceptance and tolerance of "guests" hurling snide and sly (and worse) abuse at anyone not accepted into their clique. Especially if they dare to raise a controversial point, refuse to bow down if they believe that they are right, or, the ultimate crime, post anything longer, and more intellectuualy demanding than a sound-bite.

Especially if make things easy for them by S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G O-U-T the bleedin' obvious, that they have totally missed.

Again.

If you'd like to post a list of all the objectionable posts I've made, and explain why they are objectionable (I've asked this before, including of the moderator, but drawn a blank) I'm sure I could find twice as many rude and abusive ones aimed at me, and others that have been banned for "upsetting" the "regulars".

Errrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmm

In fact I'm sure I already have, but they were ignored.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Good to see that fairness, equality, freedom of speech, rights balanced with responsibilities, democracy and little things like that are alive and well.

Not here though.

You guys prefer to shoot the messenger!

I'm "impressed with your approach to sensible reasoned coverage of the topics raised"

Dissapointed though that you haven't actually been able to come up with an argument against ANY (hope that that didn't hurt your ears) of the points I've raised.

Oops, I'd forgotten: argument is banned on this forum - you probably did reply but got censored.

Never mind: once you're settled in you will be able to quite happily tell me I need psychiatric treatment, then follow up with an encouragement to commit suicide, or some equally germane and refined "acceptable" response to one of my "mad" and thuggish "ugly" posts. Not only will you not be censored - the regulars will dive in to help you "savage" the ousider: well said old chap, it's about time these thugs realised they weren't welcome here, why doesn't he take his insane rants somewhere where they might be appreciated, and leave us to swap patterns for steering wheel covers (that'll show people that we motorists won't take things lying down - anything we don't like we'll just ban from "our" site, that will solve ALL the problems of the world, especially motoring ones :-(
