I don't know if anyone else has come across this but when I drive my wife's Punto the rev counter seems to stick at the revs that you change gear at when changing up instead of dropping down almost immediately when you take your foot off the pedal.
Is this a characteristic of the car, my heavy foot or is there something amiss?

Its correct Im afraid. In olden times when you took your foot off the gas to change gear you would see an increase in hydrocarbon(HC) at the tailpipe, in plain terms, unburnt fuel. To reduce this the engine controller holds the revs between changes, indeed you will probably only see the engine return to a natural idle once the vehicle has actually come to rest.

I'm just a little surprised that the FIAT 'experts' at the dealership didn't just tell it to me that way rather than saying "We've put it on the computer and there is nothing obviously wrong but we'll speak to FIAT's technical people. Drive it for a week and 'see how you go'".

Holding the revs between changes is a characteristic of all modern cars. However if you find that the revs 'flare' between changes ie actually increase then that is a problem.
As I have said before, too much reliance on Fault codes again, " yes sir we can hear it is idling at 5000 revs with black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe like black toothpaste but the computer says nothing wrong so it must be alright".

reminds me of a BMW I had, it would fail to start but the BMW main dealer refused to look at it under warranty as BMW Bracknell would not recompense them as there were no error codes - the car not starting was - don't laugh - just "hearsay"
