when i put my manual into reverse, it doesn't always go in. if i try and drive on it, it makes the most horrible noise until i take it out, lift the clutch, and start again. sometimes it takes five or six tries. is this normal behaviour??!?!! it's happened ever since i have had it. one of my passengers said that the gearlever had to go back so far to be in gear it looked like you had broken its neck! any ideas? please don't say new gearbox! :-D
separate point - my peugeot 106 (no power steering) has a larger turning circle than a double decker bus. are they all awkward to manoeuvre or am i just lucky?!

i think its the reverse gear needing replaced, as my lada riva had the same problem, it was that the reverse gear had lost some of its teeth. it might be different for your car, but i doubt it. sorry about that bit of bad news :-(

Mr Armchair mechanic - you haven't got a clue - don't scare the poor girl. Probably an adjustment issue.

when this happened to my car the mechanic that i go to said it was a worn gear, he charged me £340 to repair it.

"when this happened to my car the mechanic that i go to said it was a worn gear, he charged me £340 to repair it."
Did he say this before stripping the gearbox down ? If so, I think he was guessing and probably wrong assuming that your car had the symptoms under discussion.

This doesn't mean that another car displaying the same symptoms has the same problem.

Thats BECAUSE it is a Lada.
Seriously Emma, get the gearshift linkages checked and adjusted. Do same with the clutch. Escorts suffer with similar problems and are not difficult or expensive to fix. If the clutch has been recently changed it may only need adjusting from bedding in. Find a good independent mechanic.
Good luck
Andrew.

Any problems with first gear? My son's Citroen AX 1.0 (34000 miles) had the same problem but on reverse and first gears. I had to leave it in first gear at traffic lights as it sometimes took ages to get it into gear (and then only with a lot of force) and people hooted. Citroen dealer was useless. So I decided to change the gearbox oil without expecting any change but it cured the problem. That was 5 months ago and it's still fine - the difference is amaxing and I still don't understand how new oil could have cured what seemed like a major fault. Especially as the oil is never changed as part of the scheduled servicing.
The gear lever still goes back a long way in reverse but that doesn't matter. As Peugeot and Citroen use the same gearboxes and engines, it may be worth a try for the sake of a few pounds. Make sure you use the correct oil - for the Citroen it's 2 litres of Total BV which I couldn't find in Total garages. I got mine from www.andyspares.com at a bargain price even after carriage charges. Peugeots, not surprisingly, seem to use the same oil. Shouldn't cost much to get a main dealer to do it but make sure they use the correct oil.
Hope this helps.

What car do you have with the gearbox problem- is it the 106?

yes, the problems with reverse (and, yes, it pops out of first quite a lot too) are on my M- reg Peugeot 106.
so are the problems with the wishy noise, which might, apparently, be the timing belt.
the CVT problems are my mother's Volvo 440.
sorry to cause such confusion! it's just that the more i think about my car, the more problems i seem to find! :-D

p.s. i am NOT dating any bloke EVER who thinks that Ladas are cool. On principle. and i live in London, not Tynemouth ;-)

For the life of me I cannot remember who said it (think it might have been What Car at the time) but a review of the Volvo 440 CVT said:
"Sounds like a cow and drives like one as well"
:~)

Emma
This is the same gearbox as used in the Rover 214/414/216/416.
It has an inherent problem with clean selection of 1st and reverse gears.
People are always complaining about it but there is nothing we can do.
It is down to the two stage engagement mechanism on these gears.
Just a 'characteristic' I'm afraid!

I don't think Emma's problem is due to a 'minor' inherent problem which is presumably there from new. On my son's AX, the fault developed over a short period of time at 34000 miles and, clearly, something had happened to produce the fault.
On another point, Emma mentioned in a later post that her car jumps out of first gear. Pity she didn't mention that originally although I suppose it could be due to the gear not being engaged fully. I still think it's worth changing the gearbox oil as it may help, or even cure the gear selection problem as it did for me.
