Clutch Drag/Clutch Slip - Adam {P}
For once, no problem but a question.

Given that this place is a collection of the most intelligent people I know, I was hoping someone could enlighten me.

/flattery off.

Could someone give me a detailed explanation of what clutch slip and what clutch drag is please? I did a forum search but all I can find are sentences saying well it isn't clutch drag

I know it's an unusual request but I've learnt so much about cars from here in this last year, I hope someone could add to that (limited) knowledge.

Many thanks

'Slip' is when the clutch is not fully engaging - usually because its worn out, but sometime because its out of adjustment. Generates lots of heat, engine revs away, but car doesn't make much progress.

'Drag' is the opposite. Clutch not fully disengaging - usually some problem with the release mechanism, adjustment, or the centre plate is sticking on the splines. Awkward/'crunchy' to get into gear.

Thank you very much Aprilia for that fantastic explanation but also the quickest reply ever in the Back Room.

Both can be caused by oil on the linings, leaking either from the gearbox or the engine main seal. Usually oil makes it slip, but it can get burnt into a sticky mess which makes the clutch fierce in action and also not disengage properly.
Then there's clutch judder too, caused by damage, misalignment, or ... oil on the linings.

or by sticking clutch cables or faulty clutch springs or - in the case of mid 1990 Citroens - especially Xantias- by both together.!:-)
