Hi,
After having a busy weekend under my 2.8 1982 Granada two weeks ago waxoiling the chassis/wheelarches etc., I managed to get some on the exhaust. I have both black underbody sealant and clear waxoil on parts of the exhaust and after a good blast over the local Birchwood expressway (dual carriageway over the M6) near Warrington this morning, you should have seen the smoke produced by it all burning on the hot exhaust pipes! I got a surprise when I looked in my rear view mirror!
When I got some blobs of both on the exhaust pipe while spraying the waxoil/brushing on the sealer, I tried to wipe off what I could, but ended up smearing it along the pipe. Waxoiling and underbody sealing is not a job I fancy doing again for a while, it was incredibly messy!
Will the deposits eventually burn off? Anyone else done this? It doesn't make the car smell nice inside!
regards,
Richard

It does burn off fairly quickly - but the smell hangs around for months!

The worst of it will be gone after the first decent run. It may take longer to clear completely.

I've had the remains of a plastic fertiliser bag that blew under the car welded to the exhaust for several weeks and over a thousand miles now. Having cut away all that I could, it *still* smells strongly once the pipe gets hot, though thankfully only outside the car. In fact, I have been amazed that so much smell could be produced by so little plastic, over such an extended time.

Reminds me of the experience of a colleague years ago, when he had diligently Waxoyled his car, including the hollow sections in the bonnet. Driving along afterwards, a large glob of the stuff blew out onto his windscreen - his immediate reaction to turn on the wipers did not improve matters!

What waxoil did you use Richard?.
SWMBO Tesco rt needs doing but I understand that Finnigan has gone bust and their waxoil in the yellow cans no longer available.

Try 'Ankor Wax', from Morris' Lubricants of Shrewsbury. Its available from many motor factors. £13.50 for a 5 litre can and it rates higher than Waxoyl according to the classic car guys.

I used Hammerite's black paint on underbody sealant with added waxoyl (not supposed to crack!) and hammerite's clear waxoyl in 5 litre cans which I decanted into the special pressure can and sprayed it on using the high-pressure spray kit. The Hammerite waxoyl system is from halfords and is in very similar tins to the original Finnegans product; so similar in fact I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same stuff.
Still could not believe the amount of smoke off the exhausts though!!
Applied 2 coats of the sealant to the wheel arches and floor pans and waxoyl to insides of all doors and hard to reach places like the transmission tunnel, boot floor, fuel tank etc.
What a messy job though!!

About 15 years ago I met the MD of a company who was doing business with my father. IIRC both Waxoyl (Finnegans) and Hammerrite were all part of the same group.
