Judging by Doyle's posting, the 1.8 engine wasn't used in the Mk1 for very long.

Both. 1.6 intially and later the 1.8. 1982 on IIRC. Lots of earlier cars now have 1.8's because they are torquier and I think stronger. Generally easier to find a used 1.8 from a Mk2 GTI and fit that if your 1.6 is past its best.

It was 1982, but I wasn't sure exactly what month in 1983 that the MkII first came to the UK.
What a pity that much of the original brief has been lost in the "fullness" of time....:-(
