Can anyone tell me what pinking is?

Properly known as detonation - the last part of the unburnt mixture detonates instead of burning smooothly. This causes the high pitched rattle known as pinking or knocking.
It is generally caused by too-high compression, too-advanced ignition, a hot-spot in the combustion chamber, such as a worn out spark plug earth electrode, or too-low octane fuel.
Most modern electronic systems have knock-sensors which detect this and cause the ignition timing to be retarded until it stops.
