the chief of police are lobbying the government for more cash to maintain 'bobbies on the beat'

I can not rememember the last time I saw a bobby on the beat. Do they actually 'walk the beat' anywhere in the UK? Whilst driving, shopping, strolling in the park, commuting, etc. the bobby on the beat is an illusion. The local police launch has also been decommissioned. When I last saw a 'bobby' he was attending a motor accident, but of course he was informed by a passing motorist!

So if you spot a 'bobby walking the beat' please reply, and perhaps we can all visit this strange & rare sighting.

I've seen a few on bicylces in London recently (motoring link...?), and there a few beat police in the capital too. But nowhere else in the country for about 15 years!

Norwich/Norfolk has them. Mainly Special Constables who devote their time to this dangerous pastime in an effort to bring peace to their local community, but also the regulars who do go out where possible but are generally tied up with paperwork which shouldn't exist and is madness.

Come along and see us.

Lancashire has them too. We have one walk up our lane quite regularly--you never know when, and that I think is the point. When he took over from the previous beat officer he called at every house to introduce himself.

Avon & Somerset constabulary chief police officer was saying that 10% of his constables wound be made redundant if next years council tax increase was capped. Pity that as the only thing i would trust Avon % Somerset to catching (apart from motorists) is a cold.
IMHO absolutely useless

I think you need to explain what "bobby on the beat" means. Anyone aged less than 50 won't understand. I have never seen one walking in my village - and I have lived here 25 years. Local town? Don't recall ever seeing one.

I met two bobbies on the beat in my village this summer, so I went over to say hello. They said that everyone had been greeting them like long-lost relatives.

Surprise, surprise ...

The way police pensions are funded - from Police departments revenues - in 30 years time we will have no police - but still a very big bill.

Economic muppetry is too kind a phrase..

As a recipient of the 'police funded pension' for the last two years (still working to pay my council tax, which funds the local police) I wonder why I paid 12% of my wages for 32 years into a pension scheme as the rest of society now seems to think that they are paying for all of it. Nobody seemed to be concerned in the 1970s when the police paid in more into the pension than they received thus subsidising the local rates. I know that it is a good scheme and hard to match in the private sector however my plumber father whose contributions
were invested by his union did better than me.....without 32 years of earlies, lates and nights!

Have them in South Manchester. On horse back, on push bike, on foot, often armed too :-(

I live in a decent sized village with its own police station and I can count on the fingers of one,er, finger the number of times I've seen a bobby on the beat.

That also applies to the large town I live nearby - funnily enough they only appear on the beat when its a warm sunny day... (i.e once a year!)

Leicestershire Police appear to have a new policy of lots of bobbies walking in town centre areas on weekend evenings. Melton Mowbray quite often has six or eight walking around on a Saturday night, all very friendly and chatty. Then again, when they're walking around on foot, they're not catching burglars, chasing errant car drivers or able to respond quickly to incidents in residential/industrial areas. You can't have it all.

Are these actual PCs or community support officers? (Is that the correct term?) You can tell these in Leicestershire because they drive ?koda Fabias (pitiful attempt to get this thread on topic). I'm not sure of the difference in their uniforms.
'bobby on the beat' survey - runboy
The PCSO's uniform does differ-flat caps, no defence equipment (such as baton or CS spray), and different powers to that of Special Constables/Regular officers.

They should also only be allowed to drive police vehicles on administration duty.

I suspect the PCSO will be called upon as we enter the silly season of Christmas shopping car parking....Move along please!...

A few years ago I saw two bobbies on the "beat", they were beating the hell out of a young lad they had caught up with who had just been involved in a fight in the local chinese takeaway. When I asked them politely if it was necessary to apply so much force they turned around and asked if I would like some of the same. I left pronto.
