Just picked up the DT and I have to say that I thought you meant the Signum. Regards.

Depends who in that Hotel room !

I thought you meant the Signum as well.

I am also intrigued as to whether you think up the excruciating puns in the letter headings or do you let the subs think them up?

Gulf averse travels made me smile I have to admit.

Sorry that should be Gull averse travels - and what about the Campaign for real snail - I wonder what L'escargot has to say about it?

I think HJ is saying the paper printed the wrong car, ie Signum instead of Vel Satis, so you're bound to think HJ meant the Signum!?

HJ - is the Signum any better to drive than the Vel Satis? They look (to my eyes at least) rather alike and must be in competition.

Either of them might make good buys at 2 years old when someone else has taken the hit on depreciation. But would the same apply to a Mondeo or Skoda Superb which might do the job better?

I'd also be curious to know - if one decides on a Vauxhall - what a Signum does that a Vectra can't. Ditto the Vel Satis / Laguna. Maybe this is why the bigger cars don't sell well, because they're only slightly bigger and aren't worth the extra.

Having just read this and mentally corrected the Swedish hotel room comment to apply to the Vel Satis, I am ashamed to admit to being no wiser. Is it good or bad to drive?

Is it good or bad to drive?

Last time I tried driving a hotel room, the controls weren't very well-placed, so I never really got to experience the driving qualities. In fact I couldn't even find the steering wheel, and the brake pedal just spat out water.

So my guess is that HJ was suggesting that this isn't exactly the greatest driver's car.

I had trouble with this too, probably because I've never been in a Swedish Hotel.

Do you mean it's wood lined? you can get a massage? It's got two blonde twins in it? The only CDs are by ABBA? High suicide rate?

I can't think of any more stereotypes.

What you would get, with both the Signum and Vel Satis, is a lot more room inside the cabin, compared to their smaller stable mates, particularly for rear seat passengers.

Last time I went to Sweden I stayed in a hotel in the centre of Uppsala. Very nice too - very modern, tastefully furnished and the food in the restaurant was good (a very memorable venison with redcurrant sauce and grated potatoes). The only downside to the trip was that it didn't get light until 10am and then went dark at 2pm (I was there in the middle of winter).
