Prices of new C5 range - machika
I have just been checking prices of the new C5 range on www.drivethedeal.com and the discounts currently offered a very small compared to what they are/were on the old C5 (they are even smaller on Autobytel). I think many people will be waiting until the old models are out of the way and (hopefully) prices come down, before purchasing a new model. At the current prices, the new C5 is not much less (or could be more) than the equivalent Peugeot 407.

I was also surprised to see that the engine range contains a 2.2 HDI 16v engine, which is only available with the auto transmission. I assume this is an update to the previous 2.2 HDI. Does anyone know why this is being used in the new C5 but not in the 407, and why the new 2.0 HDI is not available with an auto box? I think I am right in saying that the new 2.0 HDI is a more economical engine than the 2.2 HDI (even in 16v form).

I am surprised this post hasn't produced any response yet.

Can't answer your question but I also noticed that the power and torque outputs of the 2.0 16v petrol engine have increased from 138hp and 140lb/ft to 143hp and 148lb/ft - a return of the HPI or just gained through tweaking the conventional 2.0?

Machika, the new HDI 2.0 is offered with an autobox in the Peugeot 407. Strange it's not also offered in the C5, 'cos Citroen used to offer more diesel autos than Peugeot, despite using the same engines.

Maybe the C5 will come with the new 2.0 HDI and automatic once supplies of the old engine/gearbox combo run out?

From the Citroen.com website

2.0i 16V 143 bhp DIN
Among the petrol engines available with the Citroën C5, a new 2-litre 16-valve model (the EW10A) is launched in the middle of the range.
This 2-litre 16-valve engine develops 103 kW EEC (143 bhp DIN) and torque of 200 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The top end of the engine features variable valve timing (VVT).Making its debut on the Citroën C5, this engine is coupled with the five-speed manual BE gearbox, or the four-speed auto-active sequentially controlled AL4 type gearbox. This powertrain meets the Euro IV emission standard.

HDi 136 bhp DIN
The Citroën C5 is also available with the 2.2 litre HDi 136 16 valve engine : a model of recognised qualities. An engine of greater capacity than the HDi 138 and of equally modern architecture, the HDi 136 offers high-level power and torque: 98 kW EEC (136 bhp DIN) and 314 Nm at 2,000 rpm.
As a result, the C5 HDi 136 offers exceptional performance and driving pleasure. These qualities can also be attributed to an array of advanced technologies, including a variable geometry turbo, an air-intake distributor with a throttle valve for variable swirl, two balancing shafts to limit engine vibrations. This engine is associated with the four-speed sequential automatic 4HP20-type gearbox. This combination gives the Citroën C5 an outstanding level of driving comfort. This gearbox ensures that gear shifts always fit the type of driving and the road conditions.
Systematically fitted with the Diesel Particulate Filter System, the HDi 136 satisfies the Euro III emission standard.

From memory, the torque curve for the 2.2 HDI is flatter than the new 2.0 HDI. Everyone who has driven the C5 2.2 Auto says it is one of the best engine/gearbox combos in the world.

I agree about the engine/gearbox combination, as our C5 has the same combination, but what I am a little bemused by, is that the figures quoted on the autobytel site, show identical power and torque for the old 2.2 HDI and the new 2.2 HDI 16v. No improvement in fuel consumption either.

I was aware of this No Wheels, which is why I asked if anyone knew the reasoning behind providing the 2.2 HDI 16v for the auto C5 instead of the new 2.0 HDI , as the 2.2 HDI 16v is not available in any form in the 407 (don't think so anyway).

My dad reported seeing a new C5 on the road near the local dealers. I had a look round there today and there was nothing to be seen. Good news though, if you need a rubber cover for a Picasso, they are only £2.22!

I saw a new C5 Estate on my way to work this morning.

Despite being something of a Citroen nut, and having owned a C5 previously and admired it abilities I won't be rushing out buy one. There was nothing at all inspiring about it that would get me into the dealers to try one.

If Citroen can't inspire people like me with their new models, people who have bought a number of their cars new in the past and would happily do so again in the future, then I can't see the new C5 being a hit.

Whatever one's viewpoint on its looks, the problem Citroen are going to face at present, is that the discounts are nowhere near as generous as they were (and still are) on the old model. At current prices, it is in the same price league as the 407 and a host of other cars in the same class.

Hey people, anyone actually had a chance to drive the New Look C5 ?
Can't wait, unfortunately they hit our forecourts here in Poland in January/February 2005 :(
I want to buy it, but I can't, what a shame... Instead they're offering me any Phase-I model with 30% discount. Trouble is, I want a new one...

Besides, I don't think there's a 2.2 petrol engine available. What a pity, my frined has got in his 407 and it's super smooth & refined thanks to its second-something (or twin-something, sorry I don't know how to spell it in English). Some even say it's as smooth as a 3.0 V6.
