The windscreen of my new Accord diesel has been damaged by a stone, I think, from a passing lorry. The screen isn't cracked but there is a small "dent" in the screen. Can this be repaired or will it necessitate a replacement windscreen?

Some stone chips can be fixed - go to your nearest windscreen place authorised by your insurance company and if it can be repaired it won't cost you a penny!

Autoglass told me that provided the damaged area is no bigger than a five pence piece they can repair it. They did a perfect job on mine.

Incidentally, after I put a lovely spiderweb crack in my windscreen (changing a wiper-blade, didn't I feel like a fool) I got quotes for a new screen ranging from 150 to 450 pounds. The key here is to shop around, I couldn't believe that one place was charging three times another.

To my knowledge there are "zones" in a windscreen, and chips of different sizes in different zones dictate whether your car is road-legal or not. Anything of any size in your immediate field of view means you'll need a new screen though.

Know what you mean. I get the impression that Autoglass are only really interested in the insurance market hence their prohibitive retail prices. Auto Windscreens (now owned by the RAC) are nearly half the price!

However I seem to remember reading somewhere that Autoglass use OE glass whereas Auto Windscreens use RAC branded glass - this may therefore affect price...

I went into Autoglass sometime ago and asked for the price of a replacement screen and was quoted £390. When I said it was not an insurance claim the price came doen to £150!

I understand that time can be important if repair is required, so if you decide on this option, the sooner the better.

Many thanks for all of your replies. The stone incident took place in France last week. I only returned home last night so I'll get on with having the job done tomorrow.

Fortunately, the chip is on the passenger side and not at all noticeable from the driver's position. The size is less than a five pence piece but only just.

My experience of this is that you should try the independents. The big names took the mickey when I was getting a chip repaired for my Father-in-Law; local chaps were straight and much lower priced. Have a run through the Yellow Pages and see if you find the same.

Been in touch with Autoglass who are coming to my home this afternoon to effect a repair. As they can repair the chip it will cost me nothing. £50 if they have to replace the windscreen.

Fortunately, the size of chip is on the passenger side and is less than the size of a "pound coin."

Something to do with the upraised windscreen wiper arm crashing back onto the screen....?

Autoglass called just before 3.00pm this afternoon and have done a great job. Took about twenty minutes, and there is just a tiny speck visible.

Yep... something almost exactly like that. The day after I bought the car as well. Have you ever seen anyone drop to their knees, raise both fists to the sky and scream "Whyyyyy!"? Until then I thought it was something people only did in bad films.

Incidentally, it was National Windscreens (Park Royal industrial estate) who gave the best quote and got my business. I've been very happy with the job they did too.

I cracked the windscreen in my old XJS last winter when I put the heater on full on a cold day. I was well annoyed.
