Recently I had to brake heavily and mount the pavement with my front wheel to avoid a collision. After this, the airbag warning light came on and remained on. The next time I turned on the ignition the airbag warning light did not reappear.
How should I interpret this? Have I got a problem or has it rectified itself?
Thanks in advance, backroomers.

Probably just dislodged a connection or upset something temporarily.
If the light comes on at startup and goes off, then I'd assume all is well.

Thanks. I checked this morning and the light came on at startup and
went off.
I appreciate your advice.

I think that what probably happened is that when you hit the kerb you triggered one of the front crash sensors. This put the light on. The airbag didn't deploy because the 'safing' sensor (mounted further back on the floorpan) didn't trigger.
When you re-started the car you 'rebooted' the microprocessor in the ECU and everything was reset.
