Anyone happen to know if the recent drop in new car sales applied to Golfs? I'll be talking with a salesman on Monday and it would help to know how strong my negotiating position is.
Thanks.

I don't know specifically about VW but i work for a Toyota dealership and we've been slow.
Speaking to other people in the trade they have also been twiddling their thumbs recently so i guess that it stand a fair chance VW have had a bad time of things too.
Having said that veedub dealers have never been exactly generous!

Thanks,
The signs are fairly good. He reckoned he could get one in ten days. Last time I bought one many years ago it was case of having to match my order to what was planned for the assembly line in a month's time.
I've been round several dealers this week. The Toyota saleman seemed the most professional, and with a little prompting said he'd beat the What Car target price on Corollas. The Volvo man didn't seem that interested in pushing or negotiating, but apparently the 1.8 S40 is on 1 to 3 month's delay so he probably doesn't need to be. Honda weren't immediately offering discounts, but the list price is keenish anyway.
As you say, VW seem to like to give the impression that discounts are beneath them. With their declining reliability relative to Toyota/Honda I'm happy to call their bluff this time though.

The SMMT released the August 2004 sales figures on September 9th, so you need to wait for a few days for last month's figures - the SMMT has a website but you may not be able to use it; however, the BBC usually publishes the figures in its website's news papges.

Car salesmen had it too cushy for far too long...:-))
You've probably robbed him of that Caribbean family holiday....:-)

Would that be the 4th or 5th one of the year?

I know that automotive news Europe website is saying that VW are having to reduce the price of the new golf in Germany by 1000e or more because they arent selling enough, not sure about here though

|
VW has upgraded the basic Golf to include air conditioning etc - cheaper to do this than drop prices by features' retail values.

How generous of them! Surely most buyers would expect it anyway these days

Thanks for all the replies and especially for the offer Kev/Blue Haddock. For various reasons a Golf would still suit me best, but not if they play too hard to get.
If there are all these unsold cars around it'll be interesting to see how low prices generally will have to go to entice people to buy in the dark evening-ed run up to Christmas.

Car salemen go on "golfing" holidays to Porta Banuz with their mates, not to the Carribean :)

You are so right - two of my colleagues at work have just gone for a week in Puerto Banus, i believe Dubai is the current sales manager's prefered destination!

unless they're into extreme windsurfing.>>
My daughter and her husband recently experienced the full force of 165mph winds when Hurricane Ivan hit Grand Cayman island......
Currently back home for a short spell to recover from what they describe as a truly terrifying experience.
Re new car sales - my understanding is that most dealerships sell on average six times as many used cars as new ones and at a much healthier profit margin.

How much would a dealership make on a staple car as the golf, focus, corolla etc??
I imagine it wouldnt be all that much considering they're small cars.
|
After i've given full fleet/brokerage discount on a corolla we make around £200 on the deal. There are also volume bonus' as HJ suggests but we don't take those into account when doing the deal.
Only other way to make money on the deal is to sell finance, accessories, superguard etc.
