I'm guessing that this weeks voting on gearbox preference is low because either it's a dull question, or the poll doesn't appear half the time when you click on it. I'm hoping the reason is the latter?
On that note, I'm ditching Alxnet's software as it's too unreliable, and they have never offered technical support to any of my email queries.
The software I will be using for future polls seems more reliable and faster.

I didn't take part because there isn't an answer to cover my preference. I like manual when it suits and auto when that suits. I'd never have an auto for an overtly driver-involving car like my MR2 roadster, but for a comfy barge, I would often prefer Auto.

On the filling your tank theme:
When do you refill your tank:
1. When it reaches about 1/4
2. I carry a can, (just in case)
3. I play Russian roulette - it's the only fun to be had when driving these days
3. When it reaches about a half (you can never be too careful)
4. I cannot afford to fill my tank, so I only ever half fill it.

The thing that's been in the papers this week:

Following on from the immensely popular 'Location of Backroomers' thread, I was wondering if we could have a poll on locations of members?
Maybe I'm being anal (does that pass the filter?) but it would be interesting to me to see whether we're all pretty much evenly distributed around the country/planet, or whether there are clusters here and there.
Certainly it was surprising to see that Steve.O. lives in my little town, so maybe there are others who are surprised to see another backroomer in their locality.

It should be easy enough to word this one as a multiple-choice question:

b) One of the lesser parts of God's Own County
c) Please don't emabarrass me by making me confess to living outside Yorkshire

It's a bit like the second-novel: poor God thought she could improve on the first one. It was only afterwards that she realised that leaving out all the hills was a big mistake, making for very boring roads to drive on*, and that she'd never improve on the first edition.

Following on from the immensely popular 'Location of Backroomers' thread, I was wondering if we could have a poll on locations of members?
Seeing as I've only space for up to 10 answers in the poll, that might prove difficult. Unless of course I generalise the potential answers to; North, South, East, West, Other (for those people on the planet Zog).
ps, excellent suggestions coming in so far though. I have quite a few to keep the poll ticking over for the next few weeks to come, what with the suggestions made here, and still some to choose from the other suggestions thread as well.
Don't let that stop you from making further suggestions though. As the poll website I'm now using is more stable and reliable than the previous one, I might become adventurous and run an occasional extra poll each week.

Theres been a lot of mention of fog lights recently. So how about--
If you are following a car with their rear fog lights on, and it's not foggy, do you?
1. Flash your headlights at them,
2. As 1, but also point toward the rear of their car,
3. Overtake at the earliest oportunity,
4. As 3, and then flash your rear fogs at them,
5. Get annoyed about it, and have a Victor Meldrew moment,
6. Ignore it as life's too short to worry about other idiot road users.

Thought of this after reading thread on smoking in cars. Ie a couple of posts mentioned rubbish being throw out of windows.
I wonder how many
1)keep a bin/plastic bag in the car to collect rubbish in
2)Throw it on the floor till end of the week/Have a good clean out
3)Just open window let street cleaners clear it
4)Or stop at waste bin on the way home/destination
surprises me how many throw it out the window while driving

Front fog lights...
You are driving down a country lane and a lone car coming the other ways has his FRONT fogs on. In the rain. As it's a BMW3/all Renault/Peugeot 405 (as these seem to have the brightest/most mis-aligned front fogs) do you:
1. Drive at him on full beam.
2. Just flash him a few times.
3. Seeth all the way home, having only flashed him.
4. Sensibly ignore this flagrant breach of the Highway Code, after all, I'm not a policeman.
5. Put my front fogs on momentarily, just to remind him in case he forgot to turn them off after that fog last winter.
6. Giggle - he's a fashion victim!

IF the law were to require a compulsory technical device to help or require car drivers to obey speed limits (rather than merely prosecuting them for speeding), which would you prerer:
- driver-controlled speed warning systems

- remotely-triggered speed warning systems

Or:
IF the law were to require a compulsory device to keep cars within a speed limit , which would you prefer:

Nice try Patently, but a driver is not a device. Not unless they have robots behind the wheel down your way :)
Anyway, you're back being a monkey and conflating different issues gain (tssk! naughty boy!).
Improving driver training can be done (or not done) regardless of any of the other measures -- perhaps, as an easy and obvioius first step by not requiring a fixed proportion of passes. Whatever speed limits those better-trained drivers encounter, the question still arises of how they are to be enforced -- or if we listen to teabelly, of whether they should be enforced.
So how about separarting out your suggestion into another question about priorities on speed control?
Mine was prompted by the EU moves towards some such technology, which was why I put the big IF at the start of it, to see whether there would be different preferences for the possible technologies if we go down that route.

The use of mains timers that plug into a 13 amp socket and switch lights on and off -- when you are out motoring, of course.
There are two main types:
Type 1 has a wheel that rotates to set the time and has pegs or notches to set to control the on-off periods. Once set, these work on a daily basis, the on-offs are the same every day.
Type 2 has a numeric display with push buttons to set the time periods and is more complicated to set up. One or several time periods can be set for each day, and each day's settings have to be set up individually. Get a setting wrong, like missing an off setting, and the on or off can be wrong for a day or more.
This second timer often has a random mode option to produce on-offs randomly to give the impression the dwelling is occupied.
1) Do you use type 1 (first type)
2) Do you use type 2 (second type).
3) Do you use type 1 and type 2.
4) Do you use type 2 but only with its random setting.
5) Do you use type 2 but for only 1 on-off period per day
6) Do you use type 2 for 2 timed settings per day
7) Do you use type 2 for more than 2 timed settings per day
8) Do you not buy the second type except for its random on-off use.
9) Would you buy a simplified type 2 timer that works like a type 1 that only needs a day's set-up and then works the same each day.
Type 2 has advantage over type 1 in not losing its time setting if it is removed from the mains socket for a while, say, to plug in a vacuum cleaner.
[I ask because I think the market has overly complicated timers designed by whiz kids]

Are roads too safe?
NoWheels suggests that mud on the road at the approach to a small village is a good thing because it might persuade drivers to slow down. Personally, I am happy to slow down for the village but would rather do so in control on good tarmac.
The issue is more poignant because that section of road is actually covered with one of those "high friction" tarmac coatings. So the local authority seems to think we need a good braking surface there.
So here is my question. Where there is a stretch of road that is showing a higher than acceptable rate of accidents, should we:
(a) carry out engineering works to improve sightlines, remove hazards etc (where economically possible)
(b) Put up big signs telling drivers that "x" people died here last year
(c) Put up a speed camera
(d) Make the road more dangerous. Add chicanes. Tighten the bend. Plant a tree to obscure a sightline. Employ a local farmer to cover the road in mud.

We've just had a thread on "how old is your main car?"
Have we had one on "how many miles has your main car done?"?
|
|
|
Given the fun going on in the lorries threads how about
When do you merge in to the inside lane when the outer lane of a 2 lane road is closing?
At the point of closure
Within 200 yards (or should that be metres?)
200-400 yards
400 - 800 yards
1 Mile to 800 yards
At the end of the stationary queue
Interesting to get a range of views?
