My careful driving wife has managed 32000 miles on her original fit front Continental tyres.
I can obtain Michelin, Dunlop,or Firestone replacements for the same price. Any advice re the best replacemnt would be welcome.

Whilst this doesn't quite answer the question you ask....
How about Vrederstein tyres? They recently came out tops in the Auto Express Tyre Test. Cost wise they are (used to be, anyway) very reasonable and its certainly the tyres I will be fitting to my Golf GT TDI when the time comes....
Search out your local approved Vrederstein (or spelt something like that) fitter.

What type of Golf is it/what size tyre? I've just seen Vrederstein Sportrac for the GT TDI for about £75 tyre only (ie + fitting). My tyres still have a little life left in them, so I haven't got a fixed price yet!

I have Vredesteins on my Leon, which I find to be pretty grippy. I put them on the Passat as well. I think they only cost me £65 each fitted & balanced. The only thing I can think of to criticize is that the road noise is just a tad louder than from the Continentals which were fitted from new.
If you can get Michelins for the same price, those are reputed to be one of the best. Might be worth a try.

I too achieved around 30,000 on the original Continentals on my S Reg Golf.
I ordered two more replacements in at £60 each if I recall (haven't got the car now). If you are pleased with them why not do the same?

Yes, if you're please with the originals, they probably suit the car and your wife's driving style very well, so why change? Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.
If they don't make the same pattern anymore, check the Treadwear rating on the sidewall against that on the new continentals.

Thanks to all for advice
