I was travelling on the A39 last week and in one of those idle moments I asked myself a question where does the A39 start and finish. I came onto it at Wadebridge and left it at Bridgwater where it went onto Glastonbury and beyond. The A1 goes from London to Edinburgh, the A4 London to Bristol and the A34 Southampton to Manchester. Who made these decisions and is there a web site that can tell me the terminii of any road.

As I live in Swindon the A361, the A419, the A346 and the A3102 spring to mind.

Just a thought on a dull day.

I live on the A 361 too, in Frome. The A 361 goes from Ilfracombe to Daventry with a break at Swindon where it becomes the A 4361 for a few miles. Why?

Cheers, SS

There was a thread on the theme of road numbering in July by L'escargot and I believe this gave details of a web site of roads, their numbers and start and finish points.

Peter,
Mention of the A39 brought a wry smile to my face. I have seen on the map its called, in Cornwall the Atlantic Highway! Images of a dual carriageway with views of sea and surf were well wide of the mark.

The reality was a single carriageway in need of realighnment in places and the occaisional sea view.

Did anybody else read the Sunday Times supplement article about the A59 between Skipton & Harrogate, which is Britains' most dangerous road. If anyone's using it be careful.

>>about the A59 between Skipton & Harrogate>>

Glorious stretch of road, especially in the right car. Not far removed from the A68 and Scottish A7s links cross-country links for motoring fun.

There are some sections which are quite narrow but you take the usual safety precautions.

The Skipton end is quite nice, but the bit betwen Blubberhouses and Harrogate has some horrible crossroads. Fast A59 with lottsa trafic trying to cross -- v nasty, scares me every time, cos there are so mnay dips and cresdts that visibility can be poor.

It's the bit between Blubberhouses and the outskirts of Harrogate that offer some of the quickest moments...:-)

Going up and down those crests is very uplifting and you can normally see any oncoming traffic well in advance because the road is virtually straight for long stretches.

Mind you it's usually around mid-morning and afternoon whenever I'm in that area so there's not as much traffic.

Often have a quick break at the Devonshire Arms Hotel...:-)
