Just driven a mates 93 Audi 80Tdi. The acceleration seems to be all or nothing. Am I right in thinking that these symptoms are typical MAF sensor failure. If so are there any checks that can be done to confirm this without having to pay for diagnostics?
Thanks,

The 93 Audi 80 TDi(engine code 1Z) did not use a MAF sensor,it was fitted with the older(and more reliable) vane airflow meter or VAF sensor, which is probably not the cause of your poor acceleration.I'd suggest checking all pipework from air filter to turbo and from turbo to inlet manifold.Another problem which could affect these was severe sludging up of the inlet tracts caused by the EGR system. If all your pipework and air ducting is in good order a diagnostic session would be the most economic way of solving the trouble.
