Puncture Outbreak - patently
What was it with the M40 this morning? Between junctions 4 and 7 there were 4 vehicles on the hard shoulder changing wheels - two of which were artics.

Is it a Monday morning thing? Or did a lorry from "Nails R Us" overturn yesterday?

Got a puncture in a 6 week old tyre 2 weeks ago. wasn't repairable, and i had to pay £120 for a new tyre, which really grated as I pay £7 per month to VW for tyres.

10 days later the same tyre had another nail through it! Fortunately this time it was repairable.

Strangely enough my wife and I commented on this yesterday. Saw 4 or 5 cars with punctures in a ten mile stretch of the M1 in Notts. And there must have been another 4 or 5 that had broken down for unknown reasons.
I don't know if you remember but someone on here suggested in about June/July counting the different cars broken down to do a rough assessment of reliability! Anyway, on the way down to Dover for Summer hols I thought I would do this but lost count by the time we reached Dover. On the subsequent 3000 miles in France I saw 2 broken down cars - one a very ancient Renault 5 and the other a relatively new BMW! Draw your own conclusions!! Or is it something about our motorways and roads? Or is it the price of servicing which means we neglect our cars?? I confess I haven't a clue

Well to add to "monday puncture syndrome" I saw a black cab in the city, jacked up wheel off. Never seen a Black cab with a puncture before.

Myabe it's seasonal. I haven't had one for ages, but had one a few weeks ago, got two new rear tyres, as they were about ready anyway, 4 weeks to the day later, one went down instantly and was very badly damaged, had cuts to the tread, an exit hole in the sidewall right on the bead.
Very expensive month!

I must be overdue! One car puncture in twenty two years and over 400,000 miles of driving, and that was twelve years ago!

The motorbike seems much more susceptible to punctures however, and I've had three in three year and about 8,000 miles of riding. Unfortunately, being Z rated tyres, repair is not an option, resulting in a new tyre for £££££s each time.

I have noticed however, and so have my riding friends, that it is by far more usual to puncture the rear tyre, not the front. In fact, I know of only one front motorbike puncture, period. I wonder whether the front tyre simply flicks up whatever the rear tyre then punctures with?

I've always meant to ask whether anyone else remembers those pictures in old motoring books of a mechanic wearing a collar and tyre picking little stones out of car treads?
The legend said this was an important weekly task because otherwise the stones gradually worked their way in and caused punctures.
Is this still true? Was it ever in fact true?

I had a puncture earlier this year - first one for about 10 years. It turned out to be two of those scalpel-like blades on disposable knives had gone though the tread within about 2 inches of each other - on a rear tyre. Quite how they managed to go in blade-first right through into the wheel well I don't know, but it meant that the tyre was irrepairable (only half worn and at over £100 I was not amused). They resulted in a slow puncture - I heard the hissing when I got out of the car on arrival at work. How these knife blades ended up on main roads I don't know :-((

Ivor, it is a 'dirty-trick' to put them in a potato under your foe's tyre while the car is parked. Are you sure these blades were not in a potato? It seems unlikely that two would both be next to each other on the road and both puncture your tyre so close to each other!

Common where I live: star shaped metal spikes on the road at night, surprise surprise just a few 100 metres before the roadside vulcanizing shops.....

I still remove stone chippings from my tyres - some of them are very sharp and if they are picked up at a certain angle could cause damage.

However, I would think that the thread area has quite a thick seciton behind it otherwise there would be no retreads (not that I've seen those for a while being advertised).

Fortunatately I've not had a puncture for many years although I thought I had been nabbed last year soon after getting my Bora.

A shiny nailhead in the front offside tyre brought a quick trip to the local (very reliable) independent tyre sales and repairs centre.

Young lad got the tyre off, examined the nailhead and then carefully extracted it with pliers.

Result - one embarrassed customer. It was just that - a nailhead. Mind you the young lad throught it was a puncture repair job as well until removing it...:-)

A happy outcome was that there was no charge and I didn't need to fork out for a repair.

I recently found a brand new Stanley blade sticking in the frontmost mud flap of the rear wheel on a Mazda 323.
No sign of potato contamination or a puncture fortunately.
