when selecting first gear in my audi it doesnt always engage, i have to take foot off clutch then 2nd time it normally goes into first gear.
is this a clutch or gearbox problem? apart fro this i have no other problems with selecting gears
the car has done 130k miles by the way.
cheers

Our old Astramax at work had this problem occasionally. All to do with having a straight cut 1st gear, and not a helically cut one. Simplest way around it was to put it in 2nd gear first, then it went straight into 1st gear afterwards.
I suspect the g.box *could* be getting a bit tired. Has the oil ever been changed in it?

dont think gb oil has ever been changed, but ive not long had the car. spoke to one garage and they said its a sealed unit and doesnt need changing?? i mite call the audi garage up and get them to have a look tho im not happy with the £74 an hour labour charge!

Sounds like gearbox prob. One possible is synchro cone wear.. its. clutch between gears. another may be wear on gear teeth ie contact area of gears. another may be layshaft bearing on its way out. though this usualy affects more than one gear. Apart from what DD suggested. It will be a box stripdown job/recon?. Though you may find oil change will help?

If it is a hydraulic cluch release, pumping the pedal may help / and point to the cause of the problem - i.e., insufficent release.
If the clutch isn't releasing properly, you might get a crunch when selecting reverse (unless reverse has synchro).
If neither of these, then the 1st gear synchros are worn as steve suggests.

Don't - whatever you do - ask Audi to look at it!
Find a local approved gearbox specialist - perhaps ask around at a local garage who they reccommend. They should be able to do you a decent honets job for a lot less than a Stealership workshop.

yep, if i pump the clutch it works ok - so i guess it could be a realise problem.
im not going to ask audo to the work. its already going in next week to have the airbag front crash sensor replaced at a cost of £186 ..................ouch!

Could just be the clutch dragging slightly although this should also effect other gears but you do not usually select any others when the car is not moving except reverse of course. If it clunks into reverse then it could just be air in the clutch hydraulic system or slack if the actuator arm. Regards Peter
