Alfa 156 Aircon - Glen M
Hello, I have a 156 Sportwagon and the aircon has been fine until a few days ago. It suddenly stopped giving me particularly cold air...it still cools the air slightly but nowhere near as it used to only a few days ago. Warm air still works fine as well.

I know next to nothing about cars but was wondering if it could just be a fluid reservoir or something that I can top up or a blocked pipe or something which I could clear?

Any advice which can save me a trip to the garage would be appreciated!

Cheers

Glen

Almost certainly a sudden loss of gas and no prospect of avoiding the garage if that is the case.

Virtually no parts of aircon that can be owner adjusted.

Any idea of rough costs for this?

If its just a regas then £60 - £70 is the most you should pay.

Avoid the main dealers & find a air con specalist who knows what his doing.

Smashing...well, not exactly...but thanks for your help!

Takes around an hour to 90 minutes for a good aircon person to do this.

First there is a pressure check for leaks, If the system is leak free then they should vac out, re oil & then re gas & most places now add a dye too, Helps with finding leaks in the future.

Highly unlikely but worth a look - check to see that the compressor drive belt is not loose.

You need to know how much gas they get out. If it's low, then you have a leak that needs fixing. There's no other way to lose gas, unless someone stole it!

It may be that the variable displacement valve in the compressor is stuck in mimimal displacement mode, hence no cooling. If so, then it's a new compressor for you.

Sorry to nip into this thread but is gas not used in the daily use of air con?

Adam,

No, it just circulates round and round. In an ideal system, you would never loose a drop - but, of course, you always get some leakage. One of the usual suspects is the dynamic seal on the compressor shaft. This seal leaks more if the system is not used! - hence recommendations to run the system often,

Over time, even slight leakage makes the system less efficient, until eventually, it stops cooling.

Thanks for that NC.

To be honest, I always leave mine on. It's usually left on 1 which is enough but these days I turn it on warm to get rid of the condensation.

Thanks again

Mine did this last year soon after I brought it and quite suddenly. Murphys law made it so noticable because it was so hot...
Dealer just regassed it and it's been (touch wood) fine since.
Around £ 70 if I remember OK.

Don't overlook the fact that the gas is a) hygroscopic (attracts moisture) and b) the system will lose around 10-20% per year because a lot of manufacturers use the push-fit joints, which are cheap and cheerful. Ideally aircon systems should be emptied and re-charged every two years if you want to keep it in good nick. My 406 suffered what seemed to be a fairly sudden loss over 2-3 days of extra-hot weather (when it shows up of course) and when it was checked the refrigerant was down to about 15% (in 4 years) of what it should have been.

If you are still getting some cooled air then your compressor sounds ok, and any stone damage to the condenser will show up on a pressure test.

I sent to HJ details of the aircon specialist who did mine, so worth checking the list if you are in the Sussex area.
