Any idea of rough costs for this?

If its just a regas then £60 - £70 is the most you should pay.
Avoid the main dealers & find a air con specalist who knows what his doing.

Smashing...well, not exactly...but thanks for your help!

Takes around an hour to 90 minutes for a good aircon person to do this.
First there is a pressure check for leaks, If the system is leak free then they should vac out, re oil & then re gas & most places now add a dye too, Helps with finding leaks in the future.

Highly unlikely but worth a look - check to see that the compressor drive belt is not loose.

You need to know how much gas they get out. If it's low, then you have a leak that needs fixing. There's no other way to lose gas, unless someone stole it!
It may be that the variable displacement valve in the compressor is stuck in mimimal displacement mode, hence no cooling. If so, then it's a new compressor for you.

Sorry to nip into this thread but is gas not used in the daily use of air con?

Adam,
No, it just circulates round and round. In an ideal system, you would never loose a drop - but, of course, you always get some leakage. One of the usual suspects is the dynamic seal on the compressor shaft. This seal leaks more if the system is not used! - hence recommendations to run the system often,
Over time, even slight leakage makes the system less efficient, until eventually, it stops cooling.

Thanks for that NC.
To be honest, I always leave mine on. It's usually left on 1 which is enough but these days I turn it on warm to get rid of the condensation.
Thanks again
