I run a 1992 1.6 Escort - bought very cheaply from SWMBO's father about a year ago.
SWMBO runs a 53 reg Astra 1.6, which was a reasonably good deal, nearly new, about 3 months ago.
We both lurk in Derby, although I work in Wolverhampton - doh!
BTW, BB until recently, SWMBO worked in the Jubilee campus library - quite near you I think.

Hi Hugo,
Spot on, mate.
I live in one of the villages close to Bradgate Park, hence the alias. As you know, this is a lovely area with some excellent driving roads available to 'exercise' my Scooby.
Langrops are still in business, and have recently changed to a Kia franchise. I understand they are doing well, with high demand for the Sorento. Must be something to do with HJ's repeated recommendations in the Torygraph!
The Bradgate pub in Newtown Linford hasn't changed much, still a family eatery owned by Everards.
|
"one of the villages close to Bradgate Park"
Newtown Linford? Cropston? Swithland? Woodhouse Eaves? Thurcaston?
Not far from Barrow on Soar then!!
|

Hi Bradgate,
Do you know where the name Langrop came from?
Well, it's a combination of the sirnames of the two founding directors;
Langford and Roper
Possibly a little known fact your way.
I helped to manage their trailer sales and hire business over the Summer of 88. I was at Leicester Polytechnic - now De Montford University doing engineering.
They opened Bond Street Saab in Leicester on Vaughen way, but I noticed that had either closed down or moved last time we were there.
If you should see Mr Langford, remember me to him. My alias is my real christian name btw.

Definitely a youngish bloke but not 6'4" and it was end of April time - I presume it was just a summer job for you? Office was on left side of building and trailers round the back. Switched to another place after a couple of years - trailers not so new but much cheaper!!

New Trajet Diesel Auto which I'm running in for SWMBO and HOnda CR-V Auto 2001 with just 11,000 miles. Bought at 3yo with 3,800 and had to run it in properly!!
Will change CR-V within the year; probably for a Tucson. I like sitting high but don't want or need full size 4x4. But do want diesel and auto. May wait for Merc A-class Mk 2. Any thoughts?
--
Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
Oh - A Class Mk2.
Sat in all of them this week (Champs Elysses in Paris no less) and they're quite nice. Even the Classic comes with climate control. They look and feel bigger than the current model (perhaps because they are), but the driving position is about the same - better finished interior but very definitely A Class.
Couldn't drive them, and that's probably the most important thing, but from what I could establish by prodding and poking around, they're a nice evolution of the original.

"any animals with antlers nearby?"
Possibly.
Nuvolari collided with one in his Auto Union (now these would save F1!) during training at Donington in 1938. He was presented with the head properly mounted, and preserved it among his manifold trophies.
Admittedly that event was further south.
|
"He was presented with the head properly mounted, and preserved it among his manifold trophies."
A photo of Nuvolari and said trophy was in the programme of the VSCC meet at Donington 3 years ago when the 1930s Auto-Unions returned to Donington. They were a magnificent sight but the sound of those V12 and 16 cylinder cars was even more magnificent. Nuvolati won the 1938 race with Lang 2nd and Richard Seaman 3rd in Mercedes (Seaman died in the Belgian GP the next year)

Hi Midlife
Have you ever been to the steam fair in Welland?

I'm sane, it's the rest of the world that's mad.

Never been to the fair, despite it being only a minutes drive from my house. However, I have escorted numerous, well oiled visitors to the Station after they've left in their cars!

Ah! CPT the only BMW showroom I have visited that had bullet proof cars on display.
But still my favourite regular holiday destination.

Interesting thread, this. Why not keep it on the permanant bold header at the top of the page so that it can be added to as people join the backroom?
Nice to know a bit about people on here as well as just reading their posts.
|
It would seem that to date, I am the only backroomer to hail from the beautiful Duchy of Cornwall. Still enjoying my 320dSE Touring, but only getting 42 mpg around the Cornish lanes, where it is difficult to find a decent enough stretch of road to engage 5th gear.!!!

Oh, and a Guzzi 850T3 and a Suzi TS250.

Christchurch, New Zealand. Lived just north of Derby from 1997 - 2002, in Kilburn. Ran a couple of Volvo 340s, a Mazda 626 4WD, and a Rover 214Si over the five years. Oh and a '78 Suzuki GS550.
Now back home, to '84 Jaguar Vanden Plas H.E. (V12)(mine), '97 Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4(the wife's), '76 Mini with 1275, wide wheels etc(for daughter eventually), and '82 Suzuki 750 Katana(mine, all mine..). Motoring is not quite so expensive here, and there is definitely less traffic about. Large numbers of Japanese performance imports here, and driving age of 15 (with some restrictions) means 'boy racer' culture very strong. Cars are often very quick, driver skill somewhat slower.
Lots of speed cameras and police mean open road speeds around 110 - 120 km/hr. No inter-city motorways. Is that good or bad?

I told Big Stuff (my GRowler)he must post here but he made bola-bola and said no he posts too much I gotta do it this time.
We live in a sub-division in South Metro Manila, Philippines, 20+ active volcanos, 7,107 islands, and sometimes an earthquake (we had 4.2 aftershocks the other night), lots of typhoons. Bad roads till you get in the provinces. Anyway I got a 2001 Ford Lynx Gsi auto (silver) and a red and silver Harley 1200 Sportster (just came from California). He got a 2003 Ford Lynx Esi manual (black) and a 2000 Harley Custom Softail (blue) which he loves so much I told him why don't you marry it. We are both very keen bikers, best way to see Philippines which is really beautiful, beaches, forest, mountains and rare wildlife. We ride every chance we get. Our group is The Chosen Ones, but sometimes we ride with the Manila Mad Dogs or American Steel Bikers. Then we got this monster Mustang he bought and wants to sell. I hate it. Sometimes I can't control him, now he wants to take it drag racing. Ay naku!
He is Brit (old and retired) I am Filipina (young!, well a bit) and I have my own mini-store and a clothing business.
Enough from me. Salamat po at ma ingat ka!

Uttoxeter about 20 miles west of Derby. Pete M from New Zealand I pass Kilburn regularly and used to live in Belper nearby.
You would remember Geoff Cox cars near the traffic lights which would have been just a cabin when you lived there. Well its a huge new building now selling everything from Campervans downwards.
I actually bought a new Beetle from Geoff (who I was at school with) when he worked for main VW dealer in Derby for £624.00 which was a long time ago.

Ben,
I'm struggling to advise you here. The only thing that went wrong with the car was a cracked coolant sensor which caused the car to occasionally stall at roundabouts (very disconcerting). Andrew Moorey of Tune-Up sorted that for me. The air con works a treat, just as it did on the previous 88 Celica we had. Car has averaged about 28 mpg. Might be worth checking uneven tyre wear at the front.
As for value, no idea sorry. I bought the car nearly 2 years ago with 104k on the clock, paid £2,750 then.

Live in Purton - a village outside of Swindon, but I'm originally from Southport up there on the Merseyside Riviera. Old enough to remember when Southport was in Lancashire. Daft enough to ahve voted in the "Southport back in Lancashire party" in my first general election in 1983 !!
I now drive a Jaguar X-type 3.0 SE, and work all over the country from Chelmsford to Swansea - Glasgow to Southampton. SWMBO doesn't like to drive so can't use the "I'll drive there, you can drive back" routine !! Definitely having a diesel next time.....

Hugo - I go back to the Manufacturing Engineering department next week for my third academic year (just finished a placement year working in a well-known chocolate factory!).
Its all changed from when you were there, nice new building called the Wolfson School now. I think my course head has been there for decades - Dr Bob Young ring any bells?
Loughborough is still a great place to be, officially consuming the most alcohol per student head in the country for the last three years running! The worrying thing is that we're also still winning the BUSA championships every year - not entirely sure that those two records compliment each other but im not complaining!
PhilW - Village just South of Loughborough: would that be Quorn by any chance?

I have to say I can't remember many of the academic staff there. The two that spring to mind are Professor Burns, who was also a Director at Morris Cranes at Loughborough and another Professor who's name I cant remember, but was the head of the school. He was an eccentric and likeable chap who taught systems and drove a Land Rover Defender.
When I get time I'll look at some of my old assignments and remind myself of some of the lecturers. I was at Leicester Poly for ages before then and can remember most of the staff there, but I was only at LUT for a year.
I'll never forget turning up to the first day of the course with confetti in the car. I got married two days before in Scotland - Inverkeithing to be absolutely precise, and those new inlaws had done the car proud!
