VW Golf GTI Camshaft Position Sensor - stuartjw
Hi,

I have a VW Golf GTi 1996 and I plugged in the diagnostics computer in today to find the error message:

00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
16-10 - Signal Outside Specifications

Is this likely to be the sensor connected to the Distibutor or is it likely to be more serious? Also will this be the reason that the rev limit kicks in at 5,000RPM? How difficult are they to replace?

Any help is much appreciated.

8 valve engine, yes?

From memory, there is no Cam sensor itself but it would be contained within the distributor as you say.

Not sure if it is available as a service part mind...

I had 91 2 litre passat if it's the same engine (code 2e)
then its built into the distributor which costs about £140

I would have thought our friends at GSF should be able to help you out on the parts - exchange dizzy?

If it is the same distributor type (Bosch) as was fitted to some of the 8v OHC Vauxhalls, in many cases, a repair could be made to the thin wires from the Hall sensor to the three pin multi plug. The wires would either break or rub through the insulation.

If you find that a replacement unit is going to cost too much, it may be worth a quick look inside to check the wires.

Unfortunately stuartjw hasn't been here since October 2004.

Hopefully someone else will be able to though.

i think your car has got a seperate camshaft position sensor, the plug for it is usually located on the side of the head, not too far from the camshaft timing belt wheel.
