Any recommendations for car hire from Prague airport?

Can I recommend the local taxis to you. Several year's ago I enjoyed a thrilling midnight ride through the cobbled streets of Prague in a Skoda Favorit for a very modest fee. Once you're in the city then the sights are all within walking distance and the cold war-era tube system first rate.

As I recently wrote in another thread on this subject, it depends on how soon after arrival you need the car.
The really good deals are sometime from local companies who have no web presence.

For example, in my Czech wife's home town is an independent rental company that we use, having first taken the train to get there from the airport. We typically hire 1.4MPI Fabias, never more than 18 months old, twice brand new, and always clean and in fine mechanical fettle. For this we pay £12 per day and 4p per mile, including insurance. By the time we've purchased fuel, and consumed it at about 40MPG, we end up paying £22-£25 per day. Almost too good to be true, but it is true.

When it comes to taxis from the airport, instead we use a microbus service (VW Transporters / Caravelles) located right outside Arrivals. The disadvantage is that you go on a round robin run depending where the other passengers need to go, but the plus side is that it is much, much, cheaper - fixed price paid up front - than a taxi. The fixed fare (360 CZK / £7.50 last time I travelled) is also valid for up to four people in your party. Stonking value.

The bus service to Djevicka and then on in to the centre by metro is also only about 25 pence, if you can spare an hour.

The Prague City Server is also a wealth of information: www.a-zprague.cz/

Enjoy your stay!
Great place.

My expereince of car hire in Europe suggests that airport pickup is always more expensive than going to a local city office, for example.

I was in Cologne in July; using an airlines "preferntial rate" with a major hire company would have got me Lupo sized car at the airport for £76GBP on a special weekend rate, or £106GBP for an Astra for the same period.

I ended up getting the Astra from the downtown office of the same company for the same weekend for only £65GBP and the bus fare from the airport into town was only 5E. When I got off the bus I was 200 yrds from the downtown hire office.

Obviously the saving was good as I only had one fare to pay, different situation if say 4 of you have to get the bus but still cheaper overall.

The only downer was a friend living in Cologne knew where to hire a similiar sized car at an even better rate (£52) for the weekend and this was through a non international local company. When I did some web research beforehand I was getting quotes of up to £200 for weekend hire on Astra sized cars so it pays to shop around.

as always
