I am considering importing a Toyota Camry Gold (1995 onwards) from America. Where can I find more information about doing this and the prices of these types of vehicles. Could anyone give details of a website that deals with these vehicles or who can obtain one. I am also considering a Honda Legend.
On the net I cannot find anything.
Any replies would be appreciated.

I'm not sure importing LHD vehicle of that value makes sense, unless it's guaranteed future classic. Anyone, what does American Camry Gold have that UK sold Camry's don't?
|
Lot of aggro I would have thought. (Insurance, lights etc etc.).
I would either look for a UK or Irish Republic Camry, or buy one imported from Japan (which is RHD).

Greg,
If you want to import an American car, pick up one of the specialist magazines from WHsmiths (or similar) like "Classic American" they are full of adverts from companies which import cars and can do the necessary light conversions and SVA tests. Many of them offer a 'buy to order' service which is what you'd be after.

In Ireland, cars attarcy much higher purchase tax than here, even more with large ones, and s/h values are higher because of different ownership structure. Not saying it's a bad idea to buy from Ireland, but just make you're sitting down before you look at the prices!

Unless you have to have a US model, why not find a UK one? Depreciation has taken these cars down to the bargain basement. £5K will get you a very decent 4th-generation V6 auto with a full service history. You will pay two or three times that for a Merc with sketchy maintenance.
Camryman's Passing Forum (www.camryman.org/) is where US enthusiasts share information and opinions -- lots of handsome customised examples shown.

Does anyone know of a good garage that deals with imports from Japan?

Drawing on the mention of buying a Camry in Ireland, there's at least one importer in Dublin who specialises in Camrys, Maxima/QXs, Legends, Lexus (and the Toyota variants seen on the Japanese market).
I've had no occasion to deal with them personally, but buying from an importer who prepares the cars for sale to the local market might be easier than going through the process yourself. Also, check the rules on paying VAT and VRT when you bring the car into the UK.
Have a look at carzone.ie and cbg.ie: run a "car dealer only" serach for the model you're interested in to get an idea of prices and availability.
If you want a European spec car, the Camry and, to a lesser extent, the Maxima were more popular in Ireland than the UK. They tended to be bought by private owners who wanted large, comfortable cars and who trusted the Japanese marques more than premium European ones.

Plenty of big Jap cars in Ireland - the snag is that they hold their value over there!
|
Yeh, Irish Camrys are double the price of UK second hand ones. The place I know of that do second hand imports is an auction in Southhampton. Of course, I would need a lot of time to get the car to UK spec, but think it is worth it even though it means no holiday. The money saved can then go towards next years holiday!

Loads of Camrys in mainland Europe ,quite a few on Ebay France and Germany when I last looked, good sellers.
|
I looked on Ebay. Don't seem to see any imports though. Amazing value for money the uk spec ones!
|
Look on German ebay.de or .fr UK ebay is mainly a trash can.
|
It would be great if I knew french or german. It would be a bit of a barrier, but a good idea any case.

Have I missed something here?
Why exactly do you need to import a Gold Camry? What does the "gold " imply?
The Camrys in the UK seem to have all the toys and so forth.

What does the "gold " imply?
He has the same impeccable taste in car colour as Adam? :-)
(OK, I''m just going.)
|
In Germany I have seen these with gold badging whether thats it .

When I say gold, a friend of mine once noted that you can get a toyota camry gold in the uk for very little money. I have never been able to track these down. Gold I suppose is like the colour of the badge...import. Proabaly the top of the range, close to a lexus!
|
Camry is sold as a Lexus ES in some markets (with better trim).
UK-market Lexus IS is pretty much a Toyota Altezza. Altezza's are available on the import market at reasonable prices.

Just got back from Thailand where Camrys are everywhere and left hand drive. Made there I suspect as Toyota are producing in the country. They look amazing value. wonder what the enviro and safety spec is? Can they be imported into the UK.
I have often wondered how easy it is to import USA spares into the UK, given the amazingly low prices. Anyone had experience of spare part imports? What of the tax issues etc?
|
The Camry is one of Toyota's best selling models in the US; they are also very popular in Europe and Ireland.
Spares supply should not be a problem - Toytota UK will supply parts for any model, however there will be delays in getting parts and Toyota (UK) spares prices are heavily loaded. If you can find a cooperative dealer in Ireland or Europe then it may be better to order parts from them.
