I think it means that the DIS display in the centre of the instruments can display the car's speed.
Any ideas?

Don't know about the Audis but on the Fords if you hold the odo reset in and start the engine, you get all of the diagnostic features including digital speedo.
Incidently I found that out for free.

Can the digital speed display be used all the time as i found it more usefull than the dial as when the dial said 34 mph i was doing 30mph.
Also can it be used without the trip counter being reset.
Why dont ford document this feature or is it hidden for a reason.

Hi Martin,
I've never driven the car without the digital speedo as it is more accurate like you say. The only hassle is cycling through other things first. There is a ton of stuff including digital revs but all the diagnostic codes as well which is why I presume they don't put it in the manual.
As for the trip counter being reset, I don't know. I wouldn't have thought so becuase you need to push the button. It never bothers me because I only pay attention to the mileometer.
You can help me though; I'm getting "dTC 9202" just before the digital speedo. Do you? This flashes so looks a little urgent.

Sounds like we both have fault codes
I like the digital speedo i will keep on using it
The odeometer still clocks up mileage so thats a plus point as one website said that the odeometer wont work well i can say it does as i tested it on a short trip and it changed

Hi Martin,
Thanks for that. I just need to know now what the hell fuel open sender unit means. At a guess, I would say that it's down to one day me filling the car to the brim for a long journey and the guage reading empty; the fault code must still be logged. I've spent the last 30 minutes looking for 5967 and I cant' find a thing. I've found loads of codes but yours isn't on there I'm afraid. I'll keep looking though.

Another good thing about this diagnostic tool is that you can see an acurrate battery voltage reading so no more guessing about the batterys health.
Also the water temp/oil pressure etc is really usefull at determining whether or not you have a healthy engine.
Are there any more hidden things in fords.
I found a socket in the passenger footwell near the fuel cut off switch what does that socket do.

At a guess, I would say that port near the fuel cutoff is to plug the diagnostic laptop of whatever in. I don't know too much about these things; I only found out the speed display by accident. I never knew about the battery voltage so that's handy to know.
Still can't find out what 5967 is though!

Martin, you know what my opinion is of Fords. If you go in they may start trying to charge you labour for plugging diagnostic equipment in and all this.
On the other hand, they may know and tell you straight away. I'm leaving mine simply because, the car is running fine and it's been doing that for ages. Is yours running ok?
You could take it to Ford but bear in mind it's in their interest to find something up with it. If you do go, make sure you tell them not to do anything if they find a problem until they've told you. I told them to leave the central locking until they knew how much. Next thing I knew, the door was in bits and they'd already fitted the (expensive parts).
If it will put your mind at rest then you could always try but I would be surprised if you came away with a full wallet.

That's probably best. I'd go in, say you're getting a dtc 5967 and see what they say. I'd expect they will try to have a look at the car but I wouldn't have thought they'd need to.
When you find out, let me know please because I'm as curious as you.

Hello Adam.
I went into my local ford garage today.
I refused to let them hook up to a diagnostic machine (£68.71 + VAT) as its 1 hours labour.
They then went to the machine and they told me after i told them the code that 5967 means that the previos owner ran out of fuel and didnt know there was a fault code.

The bonnet I'm not too worried about - the liftgate handle I am. If it helps anyone to help me I'll take a pic and upload it to the msn site. You can't see it until you're about 4 foot away from the car but it will get worse.

Yep, a quick google revealed this for the audi:
1. Press Fan Down, Temperature Colder, ECON at the same time.
2. Use the temperature control buttons to cycle through the various
channels.
3. Press ECON to go back to normal. (It goes back automatically when you
restart the car.)

Likewise, on the Mk 2 Astra, pushing in the two buttons next to the radio bring up a digital speed display; unfortunately, it only works up to about 50kph. I think it's so the radio can increase the volume depending on road speed, as mine did.
